Huskies Fall To ASU 3-2 In Overtime
October 06, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – After allowing a game-tying goal by Arizona State in the 86th minute to head to overtime, the Washington women's soccer team fell 3-2 in the 104th minute to the Sun Devils to move to 5-7-1 on the season.
"Today the match presented itself in a way that I thought was a great opportunity for our team," said Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore. "As far as how our team approached that opportunity I can't say I'm pleased with it to be honest."
The beginning of the match was quiet, with the first shot not coming until the 15th minute by Kimberly Keever, which was saved by the ASU keeper. However, the Sun Devils began to push the ball into Husky territory, cracking through the defense in the 27th minute with a score off of a through ball into the box.
Less than 10 minutes later however, freshman Kennedy Smith subbed on for UW for her third appearance of the season, and scored less than three minutes later. The Irvine, Calif. native broke free with the ball in ASU territory, taking a shot just inside the box after sneaking past the keeper for an open net, scoring her first career goal in purple and gold. The match entered the half tied at a goal apiece.
The Washington attack opened up the second half hungry for the lead, with Shannon Simon and Becca Schoales each taking close shots within the first five minutes. In the 52nd minute, Simon connected on a cross from Miranda Rawlings with a header and found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season to give UW a 2-1 lead.
As the match rolled on, Arizona State continued to bring pressure, getting closer and closer chances on Washington's goal.
"We had plenty of opportunities to win this game and go up 3-1 several times," said Gallimore. "That's all attitude to me, and effort. At the end of the day if those things are subpar, you're going to get results like today."
With the match nearing the final 10 minutes, the Huskies looked to run out the clock and put the match away. An offside call on the Huskies in the 82nd minute gave possession back to Arizona State, which they took advantage of with a score six minutes later to tie the match.
"Just the defending alone, it's an attitude and an effort and we just have major defensive lapses," said Gallimore. "We don't look right defensively, we don't look tough defensively, and we don't get stuck in defensively."
In the first period of overtime, the ball spent most of its time in the Husky half, with ASU taking two corners, but neither team able to get off a shot. However, four minutes into the second extra period, the Husky defense tried to clear a ball out from the front of their own net, but the kick bounced off of a Sun Devil forward and back into the goal, giving ASU the 3-2 win.
"The amount of poor clearances and even the deflection at the end, it's half-effort," said Gallimore. "It's not the effort we demand of our players. Frankly, to perform this way at home, I don't have strong enough words for my disappointment in their ability to rise to the occasion on our home field for our fans."
The Huskies will look to regroup on Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium against Arizona at 1 p.m. for Kid's Day, with $1 tickets available to kids 12 and under. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Network Washington, with live stats available online as well.
