National Championship Rematch Set for Tuesday at East Lake Cup
October 31, 2016 | Women's Golf
ATLANTA, Ga. – Following a day of individual play at the second annual East Lake Cup, the Huskies will see a rematch of their national championship round as they tee off against the Stanford Cardinal in match play on Tuesday in Atlanta, Ga. The East Lake Cup features the top four returning teams from last year's national championship and will take place Tuesday-Wednesday at the East Lake Golf Club.
Monday's individual round was played to set the seeding for match play, very similar to how the NCAA championship rounds are played. Washington finished fourth led by sophomore Wenyung Keh who ended the round tied for ninth at 1-over 73.
"Tomorrow is going to be a great experience for us," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Getting match play experience for us this early with two freshmen is very valuable. You can't manufacture this experience with TV cameras at every hole and going head to head with another team. What we shot today doesn't matter going into tomorrow's round, it's a completely different day. It will be a great learning experience for our group and we're looking forward to it."
The Huskies are no stranger to match play as they fought through three rounds in May en route to their first ever national championship. Sophomore Wenyung Keh, Julianne Alvarez and Sarah Rhee all took part in the Dawgs' lineup and went 7-2 during the three rounds in Eugene as they won the NCAA title.
Washington's lineup of Keh, Alvarez, Rhee and freshmen EunWon Park and Ellen Takada will tee off against Stanford's Casey Danielson, Andrea Lee, Shannon Aubert, Sierra Kersten and Albane Valenzuela starting at 9:45 a.m. PT on hole one Tuesday.
UW and Stanford battled out an outstanding match in May during the championship which featured extra holes as UW went on to win 3 & 2.
The matches will be broadcast on Golf Channel starting at 12 p.m. PT. The championship and consolation matches will be aired at the same time on Wednesday.
