SEATTLE – No. 10 Washington dropped its first game of the season on Thursday, falling to Seattle U., 2-1. The Redhawks scored early in the first half to break a 1-1 tie and earn a victory over their rivals for their first time since moving back to D-I in 2009.
The Huskies have been bit by the injury bug a bit of late and were playing without stalwarts James Moberg, Michael Gallagher and Mason Robertson, which might have accounted for the slow start.
Seattle U. was the aggressor early on, outshooting the Huskies 10-1 in the opening minutes, before taking a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. The Redhawks attacked on a counter, using a nice buildup of one-touch passes to spring David Olsen who put away the goal.
The lead was shot-lived, however, as the Dawgs responded just 24 seconds later. Justin Fiddes got free on the left wing and went towards goal. He was tackled just inside the box with a clear chance at goal and the penalty was awarded.
With Moberg out, Ian Lange stepped to the spot to take the penalty. He calmly slotted the ball in to the bottom corner for his first goal of the season and already the Huskies fourth penalty conversion in four chances on the year.
The goal seemed to energize the Huskies as they began to create scoring opportunities the rest of the half. Quentin Pearson had a look at a header at the far post, but it sailed just wide, while David Coly tried a bicycle in front of goal.
The efforts for the go-ahead goal would not come to fruition and the teams went to the break tied. The tie was broken early in the second half when Hazma Haddadi of Seattle U. scored after fighting for a loose ball in a scramble off a corner kick.
The Huskies again played from behind, but this time could not find the equalizer. Beau Blanchard had a shot go wide and a couple of dangerous corners were taken, but the Dawgs remained down a goal until the 66th minute when the game changed as Fiddes was sent off, following a second yellow card.
Still, the Dawgs battled to the final whistle, but were unable to come up with the key chance down a man.
Ryan Herman played well in goal, making 10 saves to keep things tight, but the Dawgs fell in the Seattle derby, 2-1.
Now 4-1-2 on the season, the Dawgs will host another rival, this time Portland on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 3 p.m. The game at Husky Soccer Field will be a webcast only matchup of the two sides separated by 160 miles along I-5.
