SEATTLE – The Husky track team got some excellent preparation for the Pac-12 Championships next week in Los Angeles, at least in terms of the weather, as temperatures climbed into the upper 70s at Husky Track. Washington closed out its home schedule with the annual Ken Shannon Invitational, and several Huskies took full advantage of the final meet before the run of championship meets.
A number of athletes were fighting for spots on the flight to Pac-12s next week at UCLA, while others were wrapping up their seasons today looking for season-bests to carry them into the offseason. Two big notable performances came from sophomore Nick Harris and freshman Jack Lembcke, as both got into the NCAA Prelims picture with big season-best marks.
Harris, an NCAA semifinalist last year at 1,500-meters, proved he was rounding into form at the right time today, as he got the win in the 1,500m in a time of 3:44.91, becoming the third Husky under 3:45 this year along with Izaic Yorks and Johnathan Stevens. That also gave Harris the Husky Track record, and moved him into potential West Prelim range.
Lembcke, the South Dakota product, tossed a shot put PR of 56-feet and 1-inch to take second behind junior Frank Catelli, who went 58-3 for the win. Lembcke moves to 54th in the West Region with the top 48 making it to Austin. Brian Hutchison also had a season-best of 53-9 ¾ to take fourth.
The Huskies went 1-2 in the men's discus today as well as Catelli won with a throw of 173-3 and sophomore Dan Boyden threw 164-2. Redshirt freshman Gina Flint won both the shot put and discus for the second week in a row, taking the women's shot at 48-10 ¾ and the discus at 162-1.
A new top-10 mark in the women's hammer came from freshman Onyie Chibuogwu. One week after Bev Coleman threw 174-4 for the new No. 3 mark in school history, Chibuogwu nearly matched that with a toss of 174-0 to move to No. 4 all time.
Jax Thoirs and Kristina Owsinski won the pole vault titles for the second straight week today. Thoirs made 17-2 ¾ and barely missed at 17-10 and change, while Lev Marcus, Chris Williams, and J.J. Juilfs all cleared 16-6 ¾. Owsinski had three consecutive third attempt makes, going over 13-7 ¾, and then she raised the bar to a potential school record 14-5 ¼, but was unable to clear despite an excellent second attempt. Diamara Planell Cruz had a clearance of 13-3 ¾ after taking last week off to heal a foot issue.
In the women's 1,500-meters, Jenna Sanders had a nine-second PR to take second-place, crossing in 4:33.38. Older brother Dan Sanders, a 2014 grad competing unattached, also broke the track record in the 400m hurdles, winning in 51.97 seconds.
Joey Bosserman also had a significant best in the women's 1500-meters, as she crossed in 4:37.39. Keith Williams looked strong in winning the 800-meters in 1:52.77, just off his PR.
In the sprints, Alexis Ford rolled to a career-best time of 56.18 seconds, just getting edged by junior Krista Armstead, running unattached today, in 56.15. Cydnicia Wade won the women's 200-meters in 24.49, slightly wind-aided, but just off the Husky top-10 list. Wade also took second in the 100m in 12.09. Junior Travis Marshall had his best outing of the outdoor season, coming back from an injury, as the Kirkland native ran a wind-aided 10.65 second 100-meters time, finishing second.
Senior Chase Walker matched his high jump PR with a make of 6-feet, 9-inches today and freshman Mayson Douglass got a win in the women's high jump with a new PR of 5-4 ¼. Sophomore Kate Adler got a best long jump today of 17-9 ½ to finish second.
The Huskies will now make their Pac-12 selections and travel to UCLA to compete for conference supremacy next Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17.
