LOS ANGELES - Four Huskies finished up two long days in L.A. at the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships this afternoon, with senior Nick Pfeiffer and junior C.J. Smith each finishing ninth in the conference in their respective multis. UCLA hosted the meet at Drake Stadium, where the rest of the Pac-12's best will gather next weekend for the Pac-12 Championships.
Both Pfeiffer and Smith ended up just a few points shy of scoring in the top-eight. Pfeiffer finished with a career-best total score of 6,943 points, just 51 points out of seventh-place overall. Smith was just off her best with a final tally of 4,886 points. Also finishing up were redshirt freshmen Cole Jensen and Carson Murray. Jensen was 13th with 6,614 points, a big PR by 160 points, while Murray finished 14th with 5,151 points, hurt by earning zero points in the long jump on Saturday.
Pfeiffer started his second day running 16.02 seconds in the 110m hurdles, a season-best. He threw 123-10 in the discus, and then cleared 15-2 1/4 in the pole vault, tying for third in that event. Pfeiffer's biggest PR came in the ninth event, the javeling, as he threw 163-feet, 2-inches, a career-best by more than 20 feet. He then closed out with another huge best, running the 1,500-meters nine seconds faster than he ever had previously, finishing in 4:31.94.
Smith's day two began with a long jump of 17-5 1/2. She threw 87-6 in the javelin, and then finished third in the final 800-meter run, going 2:13.96. This was just the second career heptathlon for Smith, who took up the multis this year after competing in everything from the 400-meter hurdles to the steeplechase.
Jensen had PRs in four of the five events today. He threw the discus 103-10, cleared 14-2 1/2 in the pole vault, threw 119-1 in the javelin, and closed with a time of 4:53.61 in the 1,500-meters, a six-second PR.
Murray, who earned a ticket to NCAA Prelims yesterday by clearing 7-1 1/2 in the high jump, did not have any season-bests on the day today, with a best event finish of 12th in the javelin where the threw 134-11.
