No. 59 Huskies Drop 5-2 decision to No. 38 Stanford

SEATTLE – The No. 59 University of Washington men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of No. 38 Stanford on Sunday afternoon out at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Huskies day was highlighted by freshman Jake Douglas' performance as he earned his first win over a ranked opponent of the season. The Dawgs are now 10-9 on the season and 0-4 in Pac-12 play.
Douglas earned one of UW's two singles wins as he defeated Stanford senior John Morrissey, who was ranked 95th nationally. The Husky freshman jumped out to a 6-4 win in the first set follow by a tightly fought 7-5 loss in set two sending the match to a 10-point tiebreak (since the Cardinal had already won the team match outright). Douglas cruised to a 10-5 win in the tiebreak to move his season dual match record to 15-4 on the season and 4-4 when playing on court two.
“I thought Jake hurried a little on Friday, he was hitting the ball fine but he didn't manage himself quite as well as he could,” said head coach Matt Anger. “I thought he did a really good job of that today until 4-3 in the second set so I was glad that he was able to recover and win the tiebreaker. I thought he deserved to win that match today.”
Senior Jeff Hawke, who was one of four seniors recognized Sunday afternoon as part of senior day for the Dawgs, earned the other singles win as he defeated Anthony Tsodikov 6-4, 6-1 on court six. Hawke, along with Emmett Egger, Viktor Farkas and Dragos Puscalau took part in their last home match as a Husky on Sunday as the Dawgs will wrap up the regular season on the road.
“It was great for Jeff to get that win especially on senior day,” added Anger. “Jeff can be miles away and I feel his Husky spirit. He's a lifelong Husky.”
The match got started with Stanford winning the doubles points after posting 6-2 wins on courts one and three. Joao Barra and Viktor Farkas were up 4-3 on court two when the doubles point was clinched.
Stanford claimed the first singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two over Gal Hakak but Washington responded with Hawke's win on court six. No. 89 Mitch Stewart battled fellow freshman No. 43 Tom Fawcett on court one before falling 6-4, 6-1. The Cardinal clinched the match on court four as Emmett Egger lost a tight match to Robert Stineman, 7-5, 6-4.
“I really thought Mitch played a really good match today,” added Anger. “The scoreboard may not show that but Mitch was very solid. His opponent is certainly one of the best freshman out there and I tip my cap to him, he hit a lot of winners. That's just tough. Obviously, Mitch had a good win Friday and defeated a very good opponent but you never get a break in the top of the lineup and you could see that this weekend.”
Douglas' match wasn't the only one sent to the 10-point tiebreak as senior Viktor Farkas took Maciek Romanowicz there on court five. Farkas fell behind after losing the first set 7-5 but responded with a swift 6-1 victory. In the tiebreak, the two went back and forth before Romanowicz won the tiebreak 10-8.
“We're getting there, we just have to be a little better and we have to be more solid,” said head coach Matt Anger. “We're winning at different spots on different days so we've got to get all seven points going. I just keep telling the guys we have to keep looking forward and not backwards and I think they're doing a better job at that.”
Up next for the Huskies is the start of a three-game road span first at Utah on Friday, April 10 at 3 p.m. The Huskies then head to Arizona on Sunday, April 12 and Oregon on Saturday, April 18.
