UW Scores Early And Often To Clinch Series Win Over Stanford
April 04, 2015 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Every Husky had at least one hit by the fifth inning as Washington took out 17 years of frustration in a 13-1 win over Stanford Friday night at Sunken Diamond. The victory assured Washington (17-12, 4-7 Pac-12) of its first series win in Palo Alto against the Cardinal (11-16, 0-8) since 1997.
The offensive outburst nearly overshadowed Tyler Davis' stellar pitching performance. The senior from nearby Mountain View, Calif. pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits in picking up his fifth win of the season. He struck out three and walked one in earning his 20th career victory – just the seventh Husky to reach the 20-win plateau.
Davis has pitched 18 1/3 straight scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to 1.89. The Cardinals' lone run came in the ninth off reliever Alex Nesbitt.
The Huskies sent 10 batters to the plate in the 30-minute top of the first inning to spot Davis a comfortable 5-0 lead before he even threw a pitch.
“It doesn't change anything for me,” Davis said of how the early lead affected the way he pitched. “All it does is raise the electricity in the dugout, and it allows me to just pound strikes out there.”
On the other side, Stanford starter Chris Viall (1-3) didn't record an out and faced only four batters before being chased from the game. After Brendan Berry followed a RBI single by Braden Bishop with a two-run double, Viall's day was done 16 pitches into his night.
But, the Huskies were not done scoring. The Huskies re-loaded the bases off reliever Gabe Cramer for No. 7 hitter Will Sparks. Still without an out, the senior from nearby Saratoga grounded into a double play that scored a run to make it 4-0. The final run crossed the plate after No. 9 hitter Kyle London singled off the glove of Cramer to score Chris Baker.
The offense kept its foot on the gas in the second, scoring four more runs to take a 9-0 lead. Bishop and Berry each doubled home a run, Alex Schmidt picked up a RBI single and the final run of the inning scored on a passed ball. By the end of the top of the inning, every Husky had already reached base.
In the fourth, UW scored two more runs to make it 11-0. Schmidt, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on a double by Joey Morgan. Another run would score on a wild pitch.
The Huskies added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to make it 13-0.
Washington pounded out 16 hits, its second highest total of the season.
Schmidt had a career-high tying three hits and was 3 for 5 on the night. Bishop reached base all five times and was 3 for 3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Berry was 2 for 6 with two doubles and 3 RBI.
Baker extended his career-best hit streak to 10 games. He was the last Husky starter to record a hit, but ended the night 2 for 5 with two runs scored. He has eight games with multi-hits during his streak.
The Huskies go for their first-ever sweep at Stanford tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
