Huskies Shutout Stanford, 5-0, To Make History
April 05, 2015 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Washington beat Stanford 5-0 Saturday at Sunken Diamond to complete its first-ever road sweep of the Cardinal. The Huskies had only swept the Cardinal once previously at home in 2010.
Three Husky pitchers allowed two hits and combined for the team's first-ever shutout of the Cardinal on the road.
Washington outscored the Cardinal 22-3 in the series. They improved to 18-12 on the season, 5-7 in Pac-12 play, while Stanford (11-17, 0-9) remains winless in Pac-12 play.
For the third time in three days, the Huskies spotted their starter a first inning lead – this time a 2-0 advantage for Ryan Schmitten. No. 6 hitter Alex Schmidt provided the big hit with a bases-loaded, two-out liner off the leg of pitcher Logan James for a two-run single.
James settled down from there until the fifth when the Huskies chased him from the game. Braden Bishop walked, part of a current stretch of reaching base in 10-straight at bats. With Branden Berry at bat, he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher Alex Dunlap.
Berry promptly singled through the hole between first and second to score Bishop and extend his hit streak to nine games. Berry's hit gave UW a 3-0 lead and sent James to the showers.
Meanwhile, after giving up a two-out single in the first inning, Schmitten retired the next 16 batters he faced.
“I was hitting my spots, working down in the zone,” Schmitten from Puyallup, Wash. said. “My sink was really working for me and I tried to let my infielders do the work behind me.”
He left after six innings, giving up only one hit and hitting a batter – both in the first inning. He earned his first win as a Husky and lowered his ERA from 6.39 to 4.34.
Freshman catcher Joey Morgan provided some insurance in the eighth inning smashing a two-run home run to make the score 5-0. With Will Sparks aboard, Morgan took a 1-1 fastball from Tyler Thorne into the trees just beyond the left field wall for his second homer of the year.
Brandon Choate and Troy Rallings pitched the final three innings to preserve the 5-0 lead.
Washington only had seven hits, but each one of them seemingly counted.
Bishop reached base five times, going 3 for 3 at the plate and walking twice. He scored twice and also stole two bases. He finished the series 6 for 8 (.750) with six runs and two RBI.
Schmidt went 2 for 4 with two RBI. He hit .538 (7 for 13) in the series with three runs batted in.
Stanford's Mikey Diekroeger had both of his team's two hits.
The Huskies cross the state next week for a three-game series against Washington State. The two rivals will play Thursday through Saturday with all three games appearing on the Pac-12 Networks.
