UW Takes Thursday Night Tilt, 4-2, At Stanford
April 03, 2015 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Washington scored three times in the third inning with two outs to take a 4-2 advantage and three Husky pitchers made that lead stand as Washington beat Stanford Thursday night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
The Huskies (16-12, 3-7 Pac-12) got off to a fast start in the first of three games against Stanford (11-15, 0-7), spotting Bay Area native Noah Bremer to a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first.
Jack Meggs, hitting lead-off for the first time all season, walked to start the game. He was sacrificed to second and then with two outs, Branden Berry singled him home. It was Berry's team-leading 19th RBI and extended his hit-streak to seven games.
Bremer couldn't hold the lead though, giving a run back in each of the first two innings on sacrifice flies to fall behind 2-1.
But, Washington answered back in the third in what ended up being the last of the runs by either team, scoring three times with two outs for the 4-2 lead.
With one out, Meggs and Levi Jordan reached on singles, and Braden Bishop walked to load the bases. After Berry stuck out, Chris Baker extended his hit-streak to nine games with a ball to third base that squibbed through the hole for a two-run single.
The next hitter Josh Cushing doubled off the glove of diving centerfielder Jack Klein to score Bishop and give Bremer a two-run cushion.
Bremer rolled through Stanford until allowing a hit and a walk to start the sixth. The Berkeley native left the game at that point, giving way to Brandon Choate, who ended up striking out the side to hold the 4-2 lead.
Bremer (4-2) ended up giving up six hits, walking two and striking out one in his homecoming.
Choate struck out six in three innings of relief and Troy Ralling set down Stanford in order in the ninth to save his first game of the year.
Baker, from nearby San Mateo, and Alex Schmidt both had two of Washington's nine hits to lead the offense. It was the seventh multi-hit game by Baker during his nine-game hit streak and it was Schmidt's first multi-hit game of the year.
The Huskies and Cardinal meet again Friday night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks).
All-American Tyler Davis (4-2, 2.17) from Mountain View, Calif. takes the hill in front of family and friends. In all, 11 Huskies on the current roster call the Bay Area home.
