BOULDER, Colo. – No. 7 Washington is right in the thick of the Pac-12 Championships after round one, finishing with a 5-over 289 to sit in fourth place just five shots off the lead. The Dawgs are one of seven teams within 10 shots of the lead as the always competitive Pac-12 has four teams ranked in the top-10 and six in the top-20.
“We are in good position,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “Five shots is not a lot to make up in college golf and it is like the old saying that you can't win a tournament on the first day, but you can lose it.”
It is one of the teams outside of the top-20 that holds the first round lead as No. 28 Oregon finished at even-par 284. The Ducks are two shots up on No. 16 Stanford, while No. 3 UCLA is third at 3-over. The Dawgs are fourth at 5-over, while No. 6 Arizona is fifth at 8-over. Top-ranked USC is back in sixth place at 9-over.
Washington got consistent play throughout their lineup with all five players finishing between 1- and 3-over par.
“I like our consistency,” said Mulflur. “Nobody is out there feeling the pressure of knowing their score will be kept because all five are capable of putting together a good round.”
The overall lead is held by Caroline Inglis of Oregon who is 4-under. On the day, eight players managed a score in the red figures.
The Huskies had a trio of players at 1-over 72 to tie for 12th after the first round from the Boulder Country Club. Ying Luo, Eimi Koga and Charlotte Thomas each played the back nine, which was their opening side, at even-par, before playing the front at 1-over. Yuo and Thomas each made two birdies and three bogeys on the day, while Koga made three birdies, but four bogeys.
“I thought Charlotte looked great,” said Mulflur. “She had been scuffling a little bit lately, but has been working really hard and is starting to look sharper. Having her on track really helps.”
The other score kept came from Jennifer Yang who shot a 2-over 73 and is tied for 21st. Yang made the only double-bogey of the day for the Dawgs, but also made three birdies to go with just three bogeys.
Cyd Okino rounded out the squad at 3-over and is tied for 26th. Her 3-over was the best score not used by any of the 11 teams in the tournament.
Tuesday, the Huskies will be back on the course for round two playing with UCLA. The two teams will tee off the first hole in five consecutive groups starting at 10:40 a.m. local time.
“We are just going to need to make a few more putts,” said Mulflur. “The greens are a little bit bumpy and unpredictable, but it is that way for everyone. I thought we played better today than in the practice round so hopefully we take another step tomorrow.”
