BOULDER, Colo. – No. 7 Washington remained in contention at the Pac-12 Championships amongst a crowded top of the leaderboard, sitting in fourth place. The Dawgs finished Tuesday's second round from the Boulder Country Club at 3-over 287 and are now three shots off the overall lead.
“We've waited all year for this and all we wanted was an opportunity,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We are in good position to go put up a number tomorrow and see if that holds up.”
No. 3 UCLA climbed to a tie for the lead with first-round leader No. 28 Oregon at 5-over for the tournament. The Bruins and Ducks hold a one-shot lead on No. 6 Arizona who was the only team to finish under par on Tuesday. The Dawgs are fourth at 8-over and will play with the Wildcats for Wednesday's final round.
“It's really anyone's tournament,” said Mulflur. “The teams in this conference are so good, we know we'll have to get hot to win.”
Both Washington and Oregon are looking to become the first school from outside of the states of California and Arizona to win a Pac-12 Championship in women's golf.
No. 1 USC (+17) and host Colorado (+17) are lurking, but might have too much ground to make up. No. 16 Stanford came into the day in second place, but fell all the way back to a tie for seventh at 21-over with Oregon State. No. 18 Arizona State, California and Washington State round out the bottom of the leaderboard.
The individual lead is held by Bronte Law of UCLA, who shot 67 on Tuesday and is now 5-under for the tournament. She holds a one-shot lead on teammate Erynne Lee, while three players are tied for third at 3-under.
The Dawgs were led by veterans Charlotte Thomas and Jennifer Yang in the second round, each shooting under par. Both ladies finished with rounds of 1-under 70, although they got to that score in much different fashion.
Thomas was rock solid, making only one bogey to go with back-to-back birdies on nine and 10. She moved to even-par for the tournament and is currently tied for eighth. Meanwhile, Yang made four birdies and an eagle on the par-five second, but also had three bogeys and a double. She is now 1-over for the championship and tied for 10th.
Also playing well for the Dawgs was Ying Luo who shot 2-over 73 and is now tied for 15th at 3-over. Luo birdied the first and seventh holes to get her round to 2-under, before four bogeys without a birdie over the final 11 holes.
Eimi Koga shot 3-over 74 and is also inside the top-20 in a tie for 19th at 4-over for the tournament. She birdied the second hole, mixed with four bogeys for her second round.
Cyd Okino is now tied for 35th at 9-over, after shooting 6-over 77 on Tuesday.
“We are probably going to need a couple players shoot in the 60's tomorrow to win,” said Mulflur. "We've been solid, but haven't had anyone go low yet."
The Dawgs will wrap things up in the Rocky Mountains on Wednesday, fighting for the program's first conference championship. Washington will tee off at 9:40 a.m. local time or 8:40 a.m., PT off the first tee.
