TEMPE, Ariz. – The second-ranked Huskies came into the PING/ASU Invitational having won three-straight tournaments, but it was not their week this time, finishing 14th against a loaded field at the Karsten Golf Course.
“We'll chalk this up to a good team having a bad week,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We certainly aren't going to let his define us.”
The Huskies finished with a final round of 15-over 303 to place 14th at 22-over 886 for the championship. No. 8 Arizona took the tournament title at 3-under, the only team to finish under par. The Wildcats won in their home state, although the tournament is hosted by Arizona State.
The 25th-ranked Sun Devils finished tied for second with No. 28 Baylor, seven shots off the lead. No. 1 USC and No. 4 South Carolina tied for fourth at 6-over for the tournament.
“In some ways maybe this will be good for us,” said Mulflur. “We just need to regroup and refocus now.”
Sunday was a tough day in the desert as no team shot under par for the final round. Baylor's day of 1-over was the best round as the Bears climbed five spots on the leaderboard.
“It's usually windy here, but it wasn't the first two rounds,” said Mulflur. “Today the wind came up and it was particularly difficult for the teams in the last wave, which we were.”
The Dawgs were led by Cyd Okino who fired a round of 1-over 73. She finished tied for 17th at 2-over for the week, eight strokes off the lead. Okino made two birdies and three bogeys for a solid top-20 finish against a field littered with top-100 collegiate players.
Jennifer Yang also had a top-20 finish, shooting 6-over 78 on Sunday. The Husky senior finished tied for 20th at 3-over for the week.
Ying Luo also played well on Sunday, shooting a 3-over 75 for her final round. She placed tied for 52nd at 8-over for the week.
Placing tied for 60th with Charlotte Thomas who finished with a round of 5-over 77.
Eimi Koga rounded at the squad in a tie for 63rd at 11-over. The sophomore shot 6-over 78 for her final round.
The Dawgs will now move on to the Pac-12 Championship that will this year be hosted by Colorado in Boulder. The conference tournament that includes six teams ranked in the top-25 will take place April 20-22.
“It's exactly what you want out of a conference tournament,” said Mulfur. “It's going to make us better and prepare us for regionals. Every team is going to have the challenge of playing at altitude and really not knowing what the weather will be like.”
