UW Takes Advantage Of Five Cougar Errors In 5-2 Win
April 12, 2015 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington took advantage of five Washington State errors and scored three unearned runs in a 5-2 win to salvage the final game of a three-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field on Saturday.
The big inning for the Huskies (19-14, 6-9 Pac-12) was the seventh, when the Cougars (17-17, 5-10) committed three errors and Washington scored three times to break a 2-2 tie. The big hit for the Huskies was a two-run double by shortstop Chris Baker.
The Huskies jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning, scoring the first of their three unearned runs. Matt Jackson led off the game with an infield single off starter Ryan Walker. With two outs, he came all the way around from first to score on a single and an error. Branden Berry drove a ball into right-center that centerfielder Cameron Frost had bounce off his glove, allowing Jackson to not slow up and score without a throw.
The lead didn't last long, though, as Ian Sagdal hit the first of his two home runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Sagdal took a 1-0 pitch from Husky starter Ryan Schmitten over the right-centerfield fence for his second homer of the season.
In the fourth, Sagdal hit his second homer of the day on a 3-2 pitch, again off Schmitten. This time he used the strong wind blowing out to right for a towering shot that left little doubt and made the score 2-1.
With both starting pitchers out of the game, UW tied the score back up at 2-2 with some two-out luck in the fifth inning. Joey Morgan and Jack Meggs led off the inning with consecutive hits but the Huskies seemed destined to leave them stranded after back-to-back pop ups.
Baker rescued the Huskies though, hitting a slow roller to shortstop Jack Strunc for an infield single. When Strunc allowed the ball to get behind him, Morgan was able to score on the error for the Huskies' second unearned run of the game.
The score remained tied until the seventh. Meggs singled to lead off the inning and with one out was safe at second when Matt Jackson hit a fielder's choice that third baseman Shane Matheny dropped to allow both base runners to be safe.
Baker followed by smacking a double down the left field line that scored Meggs. Jackson was also able to score and Baker moved to third when the left fielder Derek Chapman let the ball get behind him.
Braden Bishop capped the scoring with a single to left over the drawn-in infield to score Baker and make it 5-2.
Troy Rallings (2-1) was the recipient of the late runs to earn his second win of the year. He pitched the final four innings and did not allow a run, struck out four and allowed three hits.
Baker, Jackson and Meggs each had two of Washington's nine hits.
Washington returns home for a Tuesday game at Husky Ballpark against Seattle U. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PT.
UW resumes Pac-12 play Friday through Sunday at home against Arizona State. All three games will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
