TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 2 Washington dropped a few spots on the leaderboard on Saturday, shooting a second round of 5-over 293. Playing against some of the best competition in the nation, the Dawgs now sit in 12th place at 7-over at the PING/ASU Invitational.
“We just weren't very sharp,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We have been struggling to convert shorter shots. We just aren't hitting it close enough from 70 or 80 yards, whether that be a par four or a par five.”
No. 8 Arizona had the round of the day, shooting 12-under 276 to take an eight-stroke lead at the Karsten Golf Course. No. 4 South Carolina is in second place at 4-under for the tournament, but trail the Wildcats who are 12-under. No. 44 Texas is third at 2-under, followed by No. 19 Stanford at 1-under and No. 1 USC at even par.
The rest of the field is tightly bunched with Washington in 12th, but just eight shots from third.
The Huskies were led by Jennifer Yang who was the only Dawg under par for the second round. She shot a 2-under 70 to get to 3-under for the tournament and is tied for 11th. Yang's second round was solid with four birdies and just two bogeys as she continues to shine this spring.
“Jen has been playing some really steady golf,” said Mulflur. “She's been very patient and just solid overall.”
Also playing well is Cyd Okino who is tied for 28th at 1-over for the tournament. Okino shot a 2-over 74 on Saturday, making a birdie and three bogeys.
The rest of the Husky lineup sits in a tie for 52nd at 5-over for the championship. Ying Luo had the best second round of the trio at 2-over 74, while Charlotte Thomas and Eimi Koga each shot 3-over 75. Yuo avoided the double bogey in her round, making two birdies and four bogeys. Both Thomas and Koga could not do the same, making a costly double bogey in otherwise solid rounds.
The Dawgs will be back at it on Sunday for the final round of the PING/ASU Invitational. Washington hopes for a big day to charge up the leaderboard.
“Just look at Arizona today,” said Mulflur. “If we play well tomorrow, we can really change things in a hurry.”
