TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 2 Washington is underway at the PING/ASU Invitational, sitting in the middle of the pack against one of the top fields of the season. The Dawgs finished Friday's first round at the Karsten ASU Golf Course at 2-over 290 and are in ninth place, six shots off the lead.
“It was nice to get back in the swing of things after being off for a bit,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It wasn't out best day, but there also wasn't anything really bad. We'll just need to be a little cleaner tomorrow.”
No. 4 Arkansas leads at 4-under 284, two strokes better than No. 5 Duke who is at 2-under 286. Host and 25th-ranked Arizona State is third at 1-under, making just three teams under par after round one.
“We didn't play the par fives well,” said Mulflur. “Usually that is our bread and butter.”
The Dawgs were even on the par fives for the day, compared to Arkansas who was 7-under. Still, Washington led the field in pars with 65 to remain close to the lead.
The Huskies were led by reigning Pac-12 Golfer of the Month Jennifer Yang and fellow senior Cyd Okino who were each 1-under for the day. The two Husky veterans are tied for 14th, earning their 71's in different fashion. Yang made five birdies on the day, but also had a double-bogey and a couple bogeys. Okino had a much cleaner round with just two bogeys to go with three birdies.
Both are seven shots back of the lead set by Leona Maguire who finished at 6-under 66. She has a two-shot lead over Lakareber Abe of Alabama and Lauren Kim of Stanford.
The other two scoring players for the Huskies were Charlotte Thomas and Eimi Koga who each finished at 2-over 74. Both players are tied for 41st after one round. Thomas made two birdies and two bogeys, while Koga had just one birdie and one bogey, but both made a costly double-bogey.
Ying Luo also competed and is tied for 53rd at 3-over. She made one birdie, two bogeys and a double.
The Dawgs will continue with the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational on Saturday morning in Tempe, teeing off beginning at 8 a.m., playing with No. 1 USC and No. 29 Alabama. The Huskies will look to tighten things up and make a move up the leaderboard.
“We play in the first wave tomorrow, so that should help us,” said Mulflur. “Early is a good time to play because it isn't that hot yet.”
