TARZANA, Calif. -- No. 1 Washington proved once again the reason for its lofty national ranking. The Dawgs recorded their fifth win of the season as they captured the Bruin/Wave Invitational, played at the El Caballero Country Club.
The Huskies actually had their worst round of the tournament, a 15-over 303, but it was good enough after building a big lead through two rounds.
“It was not one of our best days, but we hung on for the win,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “I don't think we have had a day where everyone has played poorly at the same time. When they finished, they were like 'what, we won?'”
Washington finished the tournament at 26-over 890, 11 strokes ahead on the second-place No. 5 UCLA.
“We beat a really good team on what is basically their home course, said Mulflur.”
The five wins so far this season ties the Huskies' record for the most wins in a year, a record dating all the way back to 1977 with a team featuring Mulflur as the top player.
For the week, the Dawgs had a balanced group with four players finishing in the top-10. Jennifer Yang led the Huskies with a fifth-place finish, finishing the week at 7-over 223. Yang was seven shots out of the lead of Erynne Lee of UCLA who finished at even-par, but no other player was better than 5-over at the very difficult El Cabellero Country Club.
“The greens here are really tough,” said Mulflur. “I think we had more three putts than I can remember in a long time.”
Charlotte Thomas, Ying Luo and Eimi Koga each tied for eighth overall, finishing with a three-round total of 8-over 224. Thomas had a stellar first round, shooting the low score of the tournament, a 4-under 68, but finished with back-to-back 78's.
Luo steadily climbed up the leaderboard with scores of 2-over 74 in each of the final two rounds. Her third round of 72 was the best of the day for the Huskies.
Eimi Koga also had her score kept on Tuesday, finishing with a round of 3-over 75 to join her teammates in the top-10. She made two birdies and was the only Dawg on the day to not make a double-bogey.
Finally, Cyd Okino placed 45th with a score of 19-over, including an 11-over 83 for the final round.
“This team is just a lot of fun to sit back and watch right now,” said Mulflur. “Having said that, we understand that the main goal is to win the last tournament of the year.”
The Huskies' have now placed first in five out of the seven tournaments they have competed in this year. Next up is the Bay Area Invite in Fairfax, Calif., beginning March 9 with 36 holes and a finishing March 10 with an 18-hole final round.
