Bremer Fantastic Again, But Bruins Shutout Huskies, 2-0
March 14, 2015 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Husky freshman sensation Noah Bremer pitched another stellar game Friday night against 11th-ranked UCLA, but Bruins ace James Kaprielian was equally impressive and carried his team to a 2-0 win in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
The loss dropped Washington's to 12-6, 0-1 in Pac-12 play. UCLA moved to 13-4 on the season, 1-0 in Pac-12 play.
Bremer (Berkeley, Calif.) gave up just one run – a first inning home run to Kevin Kramer – in 5 and 2/3 innings of work. He entered the day with a scoreless streak spanning 18 innings over three games, but UCLA put a quick end to that streak when Kramer, the second batter of the game, took the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Bremer (2-2) pitched himself out of jams in the second and third innings, and was eventually lifted in the sixth inning with two outs and a runner at second base. He threw 89 pitches on the night, gave up six hits – twice as many as he allowed in the previous three games – walked two batters and struck out five.
He waited for his offense to provide him some run support, but Kaprielian (4-1) was equally fantastic for UCLA. One of the nation's top Major League prospects, Kaprielian allowed five hits and struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings of work.
The Huskies had runners on base in every inning but the seventh. But, four costly base-running mistakes and the Huskies' inability to string together hits stopped any momentum the Washington offense built.
UCLA had its share of opportunities to score too, but stranded 11 runners on base. The Bruins finally broke through and tagged on an insurance run in the eighth to give them a two-run lead.
They handed the ball over to their dominant closer David Berg, who allowed Alex Schmidt to reach on a two-out single in the ninth and bring the tying run to the plate. But Berg struck out Josh Cushing – the Huskies' 14th strikeout victim – to end the game.
Jack Meggs was 2 for 4 on the night and Branden Berry extended his hit streak to seven games to highlight Washington's offense that was outhit 8-6.
The two teams are back at it Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Washington sends All-American Tyler Davis (3-1, 2.86) to the hill against left-hander Grant Watson (2-1, 1.44). The Huskies are trying to snap a 13-game losing streak at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
