FAIRFAX, Calif. – No. 1 Washington made it six tournament victories on the season, dominating the field at the Bay Area Intercollegiate. Playing at the Meadow Club, the Dawgs finished the week at 18-under, defeating second-place Oregon by 24 strokes.
The win is an all-time record for the women's golf program at Washington, breaking the previous record of five back in 1977 when head coach Mary Lou Mulflur was a player.
The Huskies finished Tuesday's final round at 5-under and were the only team to break par on the day. For the week, Washington shot 18-under 834, while No. 21 Oregon was all the way back at 6-over 858 and third-place No. 36 UC Davis finished at 14-over 866.
The Dawgs were led by Jennifer Yang who tied for the individual title with a score of 7-under 206. She finished with a round of 3-under 68 to chase down Esther Lee of Colorado who tied for the title. Yang made six birdies on the day, including one on the 18th and final hole to pull into a tie for the lead.
“I am really excited,” said Yang. “This is my first collegiate win so it just feels good. I didn't do anything exceptionally well this week, but my putting was pretty good.”
Yang was not the only Husky in the top-five as Eimi Koga finished tied for third and Ying Luo was fifth. Koga finished with a round of 1-under 70 to complete the week at 5-under 208. Meanwhile, Luo shot a 1-over 72 to finish at 3-under 210.
Charlotte Thomas also played well for her final round, firing a 2-under 69 to climb to a tie for 10th place. She finished with a bogey-free day that included two birdies.
Finally, Cyd Okino rounded out the Husky squad with a round of 3-over 74. Her score was the non-counting effort, although she still had a strong tournament, placing 14th at 3-over.
Next up for the Huskies is the PING/ASU Invitational, which begins Friday, April 10. The three-day, 54-hole event will feature one of the toughest fields of the year for the Dawgs. It will also be the last tournament before entering postseason play, beginning with the Pac-12 Championships hosted by Colorado.
“We are having a lot of fun right now,” said Yang. “We are ready for postseason and continuing with the vibe we have going.”
