FAIRFAX, Calif. – No. 1 Washington just keeps rolling along. Monday, the Dawgs played 36 holes to open the Bay Area Intercollegiate at 13-under-par to take an 11-stroke lead. The Dawgs put all five players in the top-14 overall to take control of yet another tournament.
“It was a great day again,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “I am really proud of the team, especially to play so well in the second round after such a long delay.”
The Dawgs opened after a delay with a round of 4-under 280, but played particularly well in the afternoon with a score of 9-under 275 to really separate from the field. The Huskies lead 31st-ranked Oregon, who is second at 2-under. No. 39 Colorado is third at 7-over, while No. 36 UC Davis is fourth at 8-over.
“There was a 45-minute fog delay, which I thought our team handled very well,” said Mulflur.
The Huskies once again got contributions from all five players, including Jennifer Yang, Ying Luo and Eimi Koga who are each tied for second, four shots back of Esther Lee of Colorado. Lee is at 8-under after a pair of 67's, while the trio of Huskies is at 4-under.
Luo and Yang lit up the course in the afternoon with the two best rounds of the tournament so far. Luo fired a round of 6-under 65 that included seven birdies and just a single bogey to move up 16 spots on the leaderboard after opening with a 73.
Yang had a similar day, opening with a 1-over 72, before six birdies and one bogey in the afternoon for a round of 5-under 66.
Koga is in that same tie, but did most of her damage in the morning, tying for the lead after one round, shooting a 4-under 67. She made six birdies and two bogeys in that round, before closing the day with a round of even-par in the afternoon.
Also in the top-10 overall is Cyd Okino who is at even-par on the day. She fired a round of 2-under 69 in the morning, before a 2-over 73 in the afternoon.
Finally, Charlotte Thomas rounds out the Washington squad, despite being tied for 14th overall. She opened with a round of 1-over 72 and finished with a round of 2-over 73 to come in at 3-over for the day.
Washington will play Tuesday's final round looking for its sixth win of the season, which would be unprecedented in program history.
“We just need to stay in the present and take it one shot at a time,” said Mulflur.
