March 01, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE - Washington pounded out 10 hits and beat North Dakota 5-3 in the seven-inning, second game of a double header to complete a sweep of UND Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
North Dakota took the 1-0 lead in the first inning off starter Josh Fredendall, but Washington immediately responded in the bottom of the inning. After an out, Jack Meggs and Braden Bishop both reached after being hit by pitches. After a double steal by Meggs and Bishop, Berry hit a sacrifice fly to right, his fourth in the three-game series. Designated hitter Josh Cushing immediately followed with a single up the middle that scored Bishop and gave UW the 2-1 lead.
The Huskies cushioned their lead in the second when Kyle London tripled with two outs and came around to score on Meggs' double down the right field line. But, North Dakota cut into the UW lead in the third with a run of their own. Designated hitter Jeff Campbell singled home Hunter Walsh for his eighth hit in three games.
The Huskies expanded the lead back to two runs in the fourth, scoring an unearned run. With runners on the corners, Meggs hit what could have been an inning-ending double play, but shortstop Tyler Follis bobbled the ball as he brought it to second allowing everyone to be safe and Joey Morgan to score and make it 4-2.
Again, UND had an answer in the top of the inning to make it a one-run game. Ryan Reese hit a seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield off reliever Brandon Choate that made the score 4-3.
From there, Choate shut down UND. He pitched the final three innings, allowing just the Reese single to pick up his second save and lower his ERA to 0.55.
The Huskies were able to tack on an insurance run in the sixth on a clutch two-out single by Berry that scored London, who doubled to lead off the inning.
Fredendall (2-0) pitched four innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed three runs on three hits, walked four and struck out three.
Cushing and Bishop both had three hits in the double header in which the Huskies combined to outhit North Dakota 23-11.
Bishop was 3 for 5 with a homer, double, four runs scored, three stolen bases and two RBI in the two games.
The Huskies and North Dakota conclude their four-game series tomorrow at Husky Ballpark with first pitch at 1:00 p.m. Washington will send freshman RHP Noah Bremer to the hill.
