Bremer Flirts With Perfection In 4-1 Win Over UND
March 01, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington freshman pitcher Noah Bremer flirted with a perfect game Sunday at Husky Ballpark but instead had to settle for a one-hitter and the victory after seven innings of work in a 4-1 series-clinching win over North Dakota.
Bremer, from Berkeley, Calf., retired the first 19 batters he faced before giving up a one-out single to Tyler Follis in the seventh. He walked another batter with two outs before getting a harmless pop up in the infield to escape the inning with a 4-0 lead.
“The nerves were definitely going late on,” said Bremer after throwing 76 pitches, 51 strikes in earning his first college victory. “Early on I just focused on throwing a lot of strikes and let my defense do the work behind me.
“The defense played really well today.”
Bremer (1-1), who allowed just two hits and no runs over 11 innings in two appearances this week, struck out six and got several nice plays behind him to help preserve the perfect game. Chris Baker made a great diving stop of a smash in the first inning, and from there Bremer sailed in helping the Huskies take three games in the four-game set.
Branden Berry gave Bremer all the offense he would need in the first inning. The junior first baseman staked the Huskies to a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer.
With two outs and Jack Meggs on base after a single, Berry took the 1-1 pitch from North Dakota starter Alex Twenge (0-2) an estimated 340-feet over the left-field fence. It was Berry's second home run of the season and gave him his sixth and seventh runs batted in during the four-game series.
The Huskies manufactured another run in the fifth to make the score 3-0 when Kyle London walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a Meggs sacrifice bunt, stole third and came around to score on a Braden Bishop sacrifice fly.
UW cushioned its lead in the sixth on a RBI single by Baker. Alex Schmidt doubled to lead off the inning and eventually came around on Baker's hit.
North Dakota (1-6) finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth when they strung together three of their five hits on the day to score their lone run.
Berry and Baker each had two of Washington's six hits on the day.
The Huskies return to action next weekend hosting a three-game homestand against Pepperdine. Game one is Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
