PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Washington junior Ying Luo fired a round of 3-under 68 to take a share of the lead after one round at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Luo led the No. 1 Dawgs to a day of 13-over 297 and a tie for ninth.
"It was a tough day for us, but I was really happy for Ying," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "She has been working really hard so it was good to see her have a good day and really battle and hang in there."
Baylor was the only team under par at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, taking the first round lead at 3-under. Arizona State is second at 1-over, while No. 3 USC is third at 3-over. The Dawgs are in the tightly bunched middle of the pack just four shots out of sixth place.
"We got off to a pretty rough start, but didn't give up," said Mulflur. "They didn't let things get to them, instead just hung in there and kept fighting. It is a really hard golf course."
Luo is tied with three others for the lead, including Amy Lee of USC, Hayley Davis of Baylor and Monica Vaughn of Arizona State. Starting on the back nine, Luo played her first nine holes at 4-under, but then bogeyed three of the first five holes on the front. Luo bounced back and finished strong, birdying the sixth and seventh to get back to 3-under and tie for the lead.
Luo was the lone Husky under par with the next best score coming from Cyd Okino who fired a round of 4-over 75. She made two birdies, four bogeys and a double to finish in a tie for 36th.
The other two scorers were Jennifer Yang and Eimi Koga who each had rounds of 6-over 77. Yang got off to a tough start, but got things together over the final nine holes, making one birdie without a bogey to finish 1-under for her second side. Koga played a more up and down round to get in that same tie for 54th.
Rounding out the Husky squad was Charlotte Thomas who shot a round of 8-over 79. She will enter the second round in a tie for 75th.
Monday, the Dawgs will return to the Palos Verdes Golf Club for the second round of the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge. Washington will look to make a charge up the leaderboard, while Luo hopes to stay in contention for her first collegiate win.
"We have two more days to go and have a chance to keep grinding and see how things turn out."
