PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – No. 1 Washington battled hard on a tough day at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, climbing up the leaderboard two spots into seventh place with a round of 9-over 293. The round was the fourth best of the second round as the Dawgs made up strokes on most of their rivals.
“Today was a better day, conditions were much tougher as the scores indicated, but we battled and grinded really well,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It could be tough to get the right club in your hands, so I was proud of them for hanging in there on a really difficult day.”
Baylor continues to lead after carding the best score for the second day in a row. The Bears are at 5-over, while No. 4 USC is second at 11-over and Arizona State is third at 16-over. Washington is at 22-over, just two strokes out of fourth-place Arizona who is 20-over.
“We've put ourselves in position to move up a little more tomorrow,” said Mulflur. “If we can just keep getting better, we'll be OK.”
Individually, Bronte Law of UCLA and Hayley Davis of Baylor are tied for the lead at 5-under. Davis' 3-under 68 was the best score of the second round. Husky junior Ying Luo is now fifth after sharing the first round lead. She shot a round of 3-over 74 and is now even for the tournament.
Luo made two birdies on the day to go with three bogeys and one double bogey. She'll enter the final round five shots off the lead and looking for her first top-five finish of the season.
The best Husky round of the day went to Jennifer Yang who managed the conditions nicely, finishing with a second round score of 1-over 72. She played her first nine holes at 2-under, but finished with three bogeys over the final nine holes. Still, the score was one of the lowest of the day to climb her 29 spots in the leaderboard all the way to a tie for 25th at 7-over.
Also playing well was Eimi Koga who fired a round of 2-over 73. Koga made five birdies to go with a bogey and three double bogeys. She is now tied for 30th at 8-over for the tournament.
“I was really excited with the way Eimi played,” said Mulflur. “She was two over and had three double bogeys, which is amazing scoring considering the conditions today.
Rounding out the scoring for the Huskies was Charlotte Thomas who finished with a round of 3-over 74. Thomas had a steady day avoiding any big numbers as she made two birdies and five birdies to get to 11-over for the tournament. She is now tied for 53rd after bouncing back from a disappointing first round.
Cyd Okino rounded out the squad with a 7-over 78. She finished in a tie for 53rd and is now 11-over for the week.
The Dawgs will be back on the course at the Palos Verdes Golf Club on Tuesday for the final round of the Northrop Grumman Challenge.
“It was good to see the team bounce back a little bit, but we'll be ready to go tomorrow.”
