SANTA ANA, Calif. – The No. 4 ranked Washington women's golf team recorded its fourth, first place finish of the season as the Huskies stole the show at the UC Irvine Invitational. Playing at the Santa Ana Country Club, Washington finished the tournament 10-under par, finishing 11 strokes ahead of the next team, No. 2 USC, who finished at one stroke over par.
“This was a great week for the team,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “To do what they have done the last two weeks after everything the team has been through is just so impressive. They have really gotten together as a team to do it.”
The four wins this season are the most since the Dawgs won five times way back in 1977.
Washington entered the final round at 10-under with an 11-stroke lead, which is exactly how things would finish. The Dawgs finished the day at an even-par 288 with the only teams having better final rounds being No. 19 UNLV and SMU. The Running Rebels had the best day, shooting a 12-under par 276, but finished fourth overall on the final leaderboard. It was the Huskies that were the only team in the tournament to finish the week in red numbers.
“To do what we did, everyone had to contribute,” said Mulflur. “They have all taken on that mentality. They all know they have to play every week and play well. They are playing with each other, for each other.”
All five Dawgs were in the top-25 individuals, with four Husky players finishing in the top 10. Both Charlotte Thomas and Jennifer Yang finished tied-for-third place with a score of 4-under 212. Thomas was sitting at tenth place heading into the final day of the tournament, when she posted a 3-under 69, climbing seven spots on the leaderboard. Yang also improved her position on the leaderboard by shooting a 1-under 71 in the final round.
Cyd Okino was close behind, finishing in sixth place with a 1-under 215. She had a final round of 1-over 73 for her third top-10 of the season.
Ying Luo had the final score kept, shooting a 1-over 73 to finish at 1-over 217 and tied for tenth. It was her fourth top-10 of the season and second in as many weeks this spring.
Eimi Koga was the only player to struggle slightly, although it came a day after two big rounds of even-par 72. Tuesday, she shot a 5-over 76 to finish at 5-over 221 and tied for 25th.
Washington has now placed first in four out of the six tournaments so far this year. Their next tournament is the Bruin/Wave Invitational in Los Angeles on March 2 and 3.
