COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Washington alum and former All-American, Taylor Peay won a MLS Cup with the Portland Timbers over the weekend. Peay reached the height of American soccer with the Timbers 2-1 victory.
Peay did not play in the title match, but was in the Timbers 18-player eligible roster for the game. Portland prevailed with two goals in the first seven minutes and then after allowing in the 17th minute, hung on for the rest of the match.
It was the first MLS title for the Portland franchise that entered the league through expansion in 2011. Peay saw action in five games, including three starts for the Timbers this season as a defender.
Peay joins his former assistant coach at Washington, Craig Waibel, as Husky alums to win a MLS Cup. Waibel won four titles with the L.A. Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo (2).
The 2013 NSCAA First Team All-American for the Huskies, Peay played a crucial role in helping that team advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. That season as a senior, he scored six goals, while captaining a defense that was among the best in the country.
Peay became just the second NSCAA First Team All-American in Washington history and was nominated for the Pac-12 All-Century Team, although he did not make the final roster.
The MLS Cup concludes the professional season that saw six Huskies see action in MLS. Along with Peay, Andy Thoma also played for the Timbers, while Cristian Roldan and Darwin Jones (Sounders FC), Ty Harden (San Jose Earthquakes and Chicago Fire) and George John (NYC FC) also saw time in the top American league.
