SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Things looked bleak for Washington as they played the final minutes trailing San Diego State, 1-0, on Friday night at the SDSU Sports Deck. Then, with just two seconds remaining Garret Jackson scored an improbable header to earn the Huskies a point on the road.
The 1-1 draw was still not the result Washington was hoping for, but it at least gives the Huskies hope heading into a crucial contest at No. 19 UCLA on Sunday night. The Dawgs need a strong finish to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight season.
Jackson's header was the culmination of several Washington chances throughout the game. Michael Gallagher set up the goal with his corner kick, one of seven on the game for the Huskies. Jackson was there to clean up the finish right in front of the goal as the final seconds ticked away.
It was the first goal of the season for Jackson who earned the start in the absence of Justin Schmidt.
For the game, the Huskies totaled 14 shots, the same number as San Diego State. Washington had their chances, beginning with a Henry Wingo free kick in the early going. His blast was too much for the SDSU goalkeeper to handle, but the Dawgs were unable to capitalize on the rebound.
The next best chance of the half came on a great whipped in ball from Steven Wright that Mason Robertson was able to get on the end of, but his header went over the bar.
The missed opportunities for the Huskies proved even more costly when the Aztecs took a 1-0 lead just before the half. Dallin Cutler was able to beat Ryan Herman in traffic from just in front of the net.
The goal led to a furious charge from the Dawgs in the second half, but the tying goal would not come until the final seconds. Washington had chances, including Jackson nearly scoring earlier in the half off a great corner from Wingo, but it sailed just over the bar.
Once the Huskies tied it, they pressed on in overtime, trying to pull out the three road points. The Huskies nearly had the winner at the end of the first overtime when Wingo's blast appeared headed for the back of the net, but instead clanked off the post.
It would be the best chance of the overtime periods for Washington as the Dawgs instead settled for the draw. The result clinched the Pac-12 title for Stanford and left the Huskies with some work to do with two games remaining.
The Dawgs will finish the Southern California roadtrip on Sunday at No. 19 UCLA at 5 p.m. for a gam broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
