LOS ANGELES – Washington scored an early goal and appeared to have the upper hand on No. 19 UCLA. Instead, a red card changed the complexion of the game and the Bruins scored twice to defeat the Huskies, 2-1.
The result is the second of the controversial variety for the Huskies this season against UCLA. In the first meeting at Husky Soccer Field, the Bruins won 3-2, scoring all three goals on penalty kicks.
Sunday, the Bruins scored on a free kick seconds after the Washington red card, which was given to Michael Gallagher after a second yellow. The Bruins would score the game-winner in the 60th minute on a volley after a deflection.
It's a frustrating result for the Dawgs who got off to a promising start, scoring in the 11th minute.
The Husky goal came on a long throw in from Justin Fiddes. The sophomore found Justin Schmidt on the near post as he rose and won a header in traffic, flicking it to the back post. Awaiting the flick was Coffee to nod it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
The goal was one of the easier that Coffee will ever score, but he continues to put himself in the right positions to get chances. Schmidt was the player that did the heavy lifting, winning his header around three UCLA defenders.
The Bruin equalizer came in the 31st minute after the questionable second yellow. Despite being down a man, the Dawgs continued to create chances. Washington finished with eight corners as they continued to throw dangerous balls into the box.
With the score tied 1-1, Quentin Pearson got on the end of a header, but his shot was miraculously cleared off the line by a UCLA defender's head.
Defensively, Ryan Herman made six saves, but was replaced at halftime by Auden Schilder. Schilder allowed the second goal, but had no chance as the volley went into the upper 90. The redshirt sophomore made one save, seeing just his second action of the season.
The loss drops the Huskies to 7-5-6 on the season and 3-3-3 in the Pac-12. The Huskies can still finish third in the Pac-12 with a win in their season finale and a Cal loss to Stanford.
The Dawgs will wrap up the conference season on Thursday when the travel to Corvallis to face Oregon State. The season finale will be a 2 p.m. kickoff for a game that will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
