Dawgs Finish Pac-12 Play With Win At Oregon State
November 13, 2015 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- It was an up and down season for the Huskies who ranked as high as No. 7 in the country, but were just fourth in the Pac-12 entering Thursday's conference finale. The season ended on a high note, however, as the Dawgs won at Oregon State, 1-0.
The Huskies can climb to third in the Pac-12 with a California loss at No. 6 Stanford later this evening. Washington finishes the season with a record of 8-5-6 and 4-3-3 in the Pac-12. The Dawgs came into the game with an RPI of 54 and will have to await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday.
Thursday's game showed the type of team the Dawgs can be as they dominated possession and had plenty of chances with Mason Robertson finishing the game's lone goal.
Robertson came through in the 38th minute during a period of the game when the Dawgs were getting one chance after the next. Justin Fiddes set up the goal with great service into the box and Robertson knocked home his first goal of the season.
It's been a frustrating season for Robertson who came into the year as a preseason All-Pac-12 pick, but has battled injury all year and just now is getting back to fitness. The assist was the second of the year for Fiddes who has been a weapon up the left wing all season long.
For the game the Dawgs had the edge in shots, 17-15, but a much larger edge of 10-2 in corner kicks. Henry Wingo and Steven Wright both had their chances early in the half, but their shots were either off target or saved by the Oregon State keeper.
Robertson's finish set up the game for the Huskies who have been so solid on the defensive end all season.
Washington earned their 11th shutout of the season, while Ryan Herman was flawless in goal once again, making seven saves to earn his 10th shutout. Herman finishes the year with 85 saves and just 12 goals allowed. His 0.63 goals against average and 87.6 save percentage are among the best in the country.
Herman should be a shoe-in for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, which will be announced next week and has even garnered some buzz for the Hermann Trophy given to the top player in college soccer.
The NCAA Selection Show will take place at 10 a.m. PT on Monday, November 16, and can be seen live on ncaa.com.
