SEATTLE – The fourth day of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships ended with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles play in the main draw, and consolation singles matches at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The day began with the four quarterfinals match ups, three of which included Huskies. Jake Douglas fell in a close three-setter to No. 67 Daan Maasland of Oregon 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Gal Hakak came back in a three set match 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 defeating Nolan Paige of Stanford to advance, while Mitch Stewart also fueled a three set comeback, defeating Billy Griffith of California 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Hakak and Stewart will face each other in the semifinals tomorrow with Maasland facing David Wilczynski of Stanford.
“We obviously knew that there would be some battles today in the quarterfinals, but all the matches exceeded my expectations,” head coach Matt Anger said.
In consolation matches Piers Foley fell to Vicente Varas of Gonzaga 6-2, 6-2, while Joao Barra defeated Matt Alderson of Seattle 6-1, 6-0. Wendell Watanabe and Kawika Lam fell in their matches. Watanabe to Jeremy Moser of Fresno State 6-0, 6-2, and Lam 6-1, 6-4 to Wyatt Houghton of California. Freshman Sebastian Hawken picked up the win in the final consolation singles match of the day, defeating Joaquin Marquez of Sacramento St. 6-1, 6-1.
“Our guys all played well and it was exciting that Mitch and Gal pulled out their three setters,” Anger said. “It is too bad that they play each other in the semifinals, but that problem only exists if your team is doing well.”
The fifth and final day will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. with singles semifinals matches. Make sure to tune into the live stream to catch Stewart and Hakak face off, or keep up with the Huskies on Twitter via @UW_MTennis for live updates.
