Three Dawgs Earn All-Region Honors
December 09, 2014 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – A trio of Huskies were named to the AVCA All-Pacific North Region team today, making them eligible for All-America selection later this month. Senior Krista Vansant corralled her third straight All-Region honor, Kaleigh Nelson picked up her second, and junior Lianna Sybeldon garnered her first career award.
The Huskies have now earned 29 All-Region First Team selections during Head Coach Jim McLaughlin's 14 seasons. Vansant was a First Team All-American as a junior and Nelson was a Third Team choice, and both have followed up with outstanding senior seasons. Sybeldon's junior season has seen a big spike in her attack percentage and blocking totals up among the nation's elite.
The two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year, Vansant recently became the Washington career kills leader, as she passed Christal Morrison's record of 1,859 kills despite playing in the 25-point per set era, compared to the 30-point sets of 2001 to 2007. Vansant now stands with 1,878 career kills, and 1,115 digs, while hitting .291 over her career, including a career best .321 this season.
The Salem, Ore. product, Nelson ranks second on the team with 2.42 kills per set. Her career-best .342 attack percentage this season is tops among all outside hitters in the Pac-12. Nelson is also averaging 0.84 blocks per set. She is the 11th Husky to score over 1,000 career points during McLaughlin's tenure. Nelson is now a two-time All-Pac-12 performer as well.
Sybeldon, also recently named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, is third nationally in blocks per set with 1.57 and leads the Pac-12. Her .395 attack percentage also ranks third in the conference and 20th nationally. The 6-1 middle blocker has had four matches with 10 or more blocks this season.
The third-seeded Huskies continue their NCAA tourney run this Friday night, hosting Nebraska in the round of 16, at Alaska Airlines Arena at 6:30 p.m.
