Huskies Fall 2-1 To Trojans
November 01, 2014 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - UW women's soccer had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped Friday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field, losing 2-1 to the visiting USC Trojans in the first of two weekend home games.
"I don't think we played very well," UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. "We played as individuals, we didn't really play collectively that well. We didn't calm the ball when we had it. We didn't pass the ball around. It ended up being a kick-and-run style soccer game. On our side of the ball, we have to do a better job. It turned into a back and forth, ugly, scrappy battle, and we weren't on the better end. It just wasn't a very good game."
The Trojans got on the board early when Katie Johnson headed home a cross from Sydney Sladek in the 6th minute, her fifth goal of the year. USC caught the UW defense out of position and took advantage, as Sladek played a cross in from the left side just outside the box. Johnson's header went across the goal and into the right corner of the net.
UW equalized midway throught the first half, as senior forward Chelsea Archer scored her first goal of the season. Shannon Simon played a ball toward a running Archer that USC keeper Caroline Stanley attempted to corral. The ball bounced towards Archer, who turned and shot at an empty net to tie the game at 1-1. Simon was credited with the assist, her fourth of the season to lead the team.
With 10 minutes left in the first half, the Trojans regained the lead when UW midfielder Amanda Perez was shown a yellow card for her tackle in the box, resulting in a USC penalty kick. Jamie Fink converted the chance for her sixth goal of the season to make the score 2-1, which would stand as the final.
The Huskies battled for for an equalizer throughout the second half, but were unable to get any clear opportunities.
UW will host No. 1 UCLA this Sunday in the team's final home match of the regular season. The senior class of Chelsea Archer, Christina Archer, Kate Bennett, Sami Page, Stine Schoening and Jaclyn Softli will be honored before the game.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. Fans can also follow the action live on Twitter at @UW_WSoccer.
