Bruins Spoil Senior Day
November 03, 2014 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - UW women's soccer dropped its final home game of the regular season to No. 1 UCLA 6-0 Sunday on a rainy afternoon at Husky Soccer Field.
"The problem in this game was that we spotted them two early goals, that was dissappointing," UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. "I thought we started off the game looking comfortable in possession. If you spot this team two goals, you're just not going to have a good day. It's hard to come back against this team, because then you have to take the risk of going forward and spreading it out and they've got fast players in every position that hurt us today."
The Huskies (12-6-1, 5-4-1 Pac-12) gave up two early goals to the first-place Bruins, as Taylor Smith scored the game's first goal in the sixth minute, her seventh of the year. Sam Mewis netted her 14th of the year just one minute later.
The Bruins (17-0-2, 9-0-1 Pac-12) would tack on another in the 30th minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. UW got an unlucky bounce in the 70th minute that led to an own goal, stretching the advantage to 4-0.
UCLA added on goals in the 84th and 87th minute for the final margin.
The Huskies were aggressive on the offensive end throughout the game as they tried to make up for the early goals and ended up with 11 shots to UCLA's 13.
"We're going to regroup and we're not going to look at the score," Gallimore said. "It's a moot point. We've got to worry about a team that we are tied in the standings with, Washington St. We have to go an beat them on Friday and look forward to, hopefully, a playoff bid and going in with a win under our belt. That's where our focus will be this week."
UW completes its Pac-12 schedule this week with a trip to Pullman on Friday, Nov. 7 to take on the Cougars. The two are now tied for fifth-place in the conference after both squads dropped two games this weekend.
Friday's game is set to kick off at 1 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network. Fans can also follow the game live on Twitter at @UW_WSoccer.
