SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Washington is off to a hot start at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, taking the lead after the first day from Sahalee Country Club. The Dawgs played steady across the board as the only team under par at 3-under 285 to lead by nine strokes.
“I am really happy with the way we played,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We were just solid all day. It was the first round of the season, so you are never quite sure and there were some nerves out there, but we handled it really well.”
Fog plagued the morning on what turned out to be a beautiful day at Sahalee. Due to the delays, the format of the tournament was changed from a 36-hole day on Tuesday to just a single round. The changes did not bother Washington as they needed just one round to build a sizeable lead.
“It's always tough when you have to sit around like that,” said Mulflur. “Honestly, that is what I was most worried about with our team, but they did a great job of refocusing.”
Gonzaga also played well and is in second place at 6-over 294, while Stanford is in third at 8-over 296. The Cardinal is the defending champion in the tournament and came in as the other ranked team along with the Huskies, but is 11 shots back of their Pac-12 rival.
Individually, SooBin Kim holds the lead after a round of 3-under 69. She holds a two-shot lead over Raychelle Santos of Gonzaga and her teammates Eimi Koga and Jennifer Yang. Kim made four birdies and two bogeys on the day to take the lead in a tournament that she won back in 2012 with a 54-hole score of 11-under.
Koga also played well, finishing with a round of 1-under 71. The sophomore played out of the No. 1 position after winning the team qualifying for the tournament. She continued her hot play with four birdies, just one bogey and a double bogey. Koga is tied for second, just two shots back of her teammate.
Yang was playing as an individual, but still has a shot to win the tournament like Kim did back in 2012 also playing as an individual. Yang made four birdies and three bogeys on the day for her round of 1-under 71.
Coming in at even par for the Huskies was Cyd Okino who is tied for fifth. Okino was 3-over after 10 holes, but closed with three birdies over her final eight holes to get back to even par.
The final counting score came from Charlotte Thomas as she shot a round of 1-over 73. Thomas is tied for 11th after a round of three birdies and no bogeys, but back-to-back doubles on 16 and 17 brought her over par.
Jing Yan rounded out the Husky team with a round of 3-over 75. She is tied for 27th in her first round after her first round as a Husky.
Ying Luo was the other Dawg to play as an individual, firing a round of 5-over 77 and is tied for 40th.
“There is a lot of competition for our top five this year, but that is a good problem to have,” said Mulflur. “It's only going to make our players better to push each other all season.”
The Dawgs will complete the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Wednesday, Oct. 7, beginning at 8 a.m. from Sahalee. Washington will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. with their individuals and 9 a.m. with the team.
