TACOMA, Wash. – No. 1 Washington is off and running at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, hosted by Seattle U. at the Tacoma Golf & Country Club. After 36 holes of golf on Monday, the Dawgs hold a 14-shot lead over second place Washington State.
The Dawgs are again showing off their depth with six players in the competition and nobody worse than tied for seventh. Washington began the day with a team score of 3-over 291 in the morning round and then backed that up by shooting even-par 288 in the afternoon. At 3-over, Washington has a commanding lead as they try to win their second-straight tournament to begin the year.
Washington State is second at 17-over, while Grand Canyon is third at 31-over. Montana and Portland State round out the top five, but it is the Dawgs tournament to lose.
Jennifer Yang has the individual lead at even-par for the tournament. She is one shot ahead teammate Ying Luo, Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon and Alivia Brown of WSU. Yang played her morning round at 1-under 71 and then followed that up with a 1-over 73. In the afternoon, she bogeyed three of the first five holes, but straightened it out and played the rest of the round at 2-under.
Luo is one back after making a move up the leader board with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. The Husky junior was shot a 3-over 75 in the morning, but bounced back in round two that included a stretch of four birdies in six holes.
The rest of the Husky team immediately follows on the leaderboard. Jing Yan and Charlotte Thomas are tied for fifth at 2-over, while Eimi Koga and Cyd Okino are tied for seventh at 3-over. Yan and Thomas also charged up the leaderboard in the afternoon, shooting 71 and 70, respectively. Thomas is playing as an individual, however, so her score did not count towards the team.
Koga and Okino both had steady days as the duo from Hawai'i were near par in the morning and just a couple over in the afternoon. Koga went 73 and 74, while Okino shot an even-par 72, followed by a 75.
Husky senior SooBin Kim was a late scratch from the tournament when she experienced some back stiffness. Kim has played a heavy schedule, including winning the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational last week, so decided to rest. Ranked No. 1 in the NCAA by Golfweek, Kim is expected back for the Dawgs next tournament, the Pac-12 Preview in Hawai'i.
Tuesday, the Huskies will wrap up the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma with the final round. The Dawgs tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m. as part of a shotgun start.
