No. 1 Washington Earns Draw In Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 1 Washington survived a tough game against No. 23 Oregon State, earning a 1-1 tie despite playing down a man for most of the second half and overtime. The tie leaves Washington as the only unbeaten team in Pac-12 play so far this season.
“Overall, we should feel fairly happy with a tie against a top-25 team on the road, especially having to play down a man for much of the game,” said head coach Jamie Clark. “Our standards are just very high right now and we know we need to win some of these games to win the conference.”
The two teams played a relatively even first half with each team having some chances, but no goals scored. Cristian Roldan was on the receiving end of some good passing from Ian Lange and Josh Heard, but his shot went just wide. Later, Heard had a chance on a Darwin Jones cross, but his header went wide.
The Beavers frustrated the Huskies attack much of the half, sitting back in a defensive shell leaving little room for the Huskies offensive players, particularly Jones.
On the other side, Oregon State hit a post and Spencer Richey made one save, but kept the Beavers off the scoreboard.
Things began to get interesting after the half, beginning with a sensational save from Richey. The senior goaltender would make six saves for the game, a couple of the world class variety.
In the 58th minute, Roldan was sent off for what was called a dangerous header. Roldan appeared simply win a header, but the Oregon State played came up with blood and the Husky midfielder was shown straight red.
Despite going a man down, the Huskies kept up the pressure on the attack and were rewarded with a goal. Henry Wingo got free at the top of the box when he collected a rebound and drove a shot that took a slight deflection into the goal. It was the first collegiate goal for Wingo and gave the Huskies a lead.
“I thought after the red card strangely the game changed in our favor,” said Clark. “Oregon State had more space up a man so they began to come out of their defensive shell.”
The lead wouldn't last, however, as the Beavers equalized just nine minutes later. Oregon State striker Jordan Jones headed home a ball from Will Seymour to square things up. Richey came off his line and nearly made the save, but Jones collected the deflection with a second header.
As it got closer to full time, the Dawgs looked as if they could win it, as they continued to attack. The best chance came just minutes from the final whistle after Oregon State made it 10 against 10 after they also were given a red card. The ensuing Husky free kick was sent into the box and Ian Lange won a header, but put it right at the Oregon State goalkeeper.
Instead, the game would remain tied and Washington would have to settle for one point. Still, a draw on the road isn't a bad result and keeps the Dawgs at the top of the Pac-12 standings.
Things won't get any easier this week as Washington is out on the road again this week to face UCLA and San Diego State. The Dawgs face No. 2 UCLA on Thursday at 6 p.m., followed by the Aztecs on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
