Huskies Strike Late Again For 2-0 Win Over Arizona

SEATTLE – For the third consecutive game, UW women's soccer got a late, game-winning goal to win in dramatic fashion as Jaclyn Softli scored in the 88th minute to break a scoreless tie and lead Washington to a 2-0 win over Arizona.
“We knew we were going to get our chance, whether it came in the 60th minute or the 90th minute, we knew we were going to get something out of there,” Softli said. “Amanda played a great ball down the sideline and I just had to make the most of my opportunity.”
Sophomore midfielder Amanda Perez won a ball near midfield and found Softli down the left sideline, where she dribbled toward the end line and closed in on the goal. Arizona keeper Gabby Kaufman lunged to her left and Softli slotted it just between the post and the keeper at a very harsh angle for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Kate Bennett scored her third goal in as many games in the 90th minute, a shot from near midfield that caught the Arizona keeper off way off line, to provide the final scoring margin. It was Bennett's sixth goal of the season.
“I'm probably the most proud of how focused our kids have stayed,” head coach Lesle Gallimore said. “I thought we came out of it really well and played for 90 minutes. I'm really proud of how this team grinds out 90 minute games.”
Washington keeper Megan Kufeld recorded her fourth shutout of the season and made six saves. The back line of Kimby Keever, Stine Schoening, Allyson Brahs and Dominique Bond-Flasza played the whole game and kept Arizona's offense at bay.
“They definitely are dangerous,” Kufeld said. “We just had a lot of great focus. If we play our best every game we are capable of shutouts and I think we saw that today.”
With three conference wins in five games, the Huskies (10-4-0, 3-2-0 Pac-12) have now equaled last year's conference win total with six Pac-12 games remaining.
Arizona (9-3-1, 3-2-0) controlled much of the possession throughout the second half before giving up the game-winner. The loss was just their second in the last 10 games. Doller Alexandra and Gabriela Stoian each had four shots for the Wildcats.
The Huskies have a short break before concluding their three-game homestand against Oregon St. on Monday, Oct. 20. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
