UW Comes From Behind To Beat ASU, 2-1
October 11, 2014 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – After giving up an early goal, UW women's soccer beat No. 19 Arizona St. 2-1 Friday night at Husky Soccer Field behind Becca Schoales' 83rd minute game-winner and Kate Bennett's fifth goal of the season.
“This feels really good because the Pac-12 is so open right now,” Schoales said. “We are just trying to inch our way up and this win goes a long way.”
ASU's Tommi Goodman scored in the 12th minute on a shot from distance that was just beyond the reach of UW keeper Megan Kufeld, giving the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead. The Huskies would respond in the 25th minute with Bennett's second tally in as many games to tie the match. Bennett struck from about ten yards beyond the right corner of the 18-yard box across the face of the goal and into the left corner of the net past the ASU keeper.
“I tried to play a through ball but it got deflected back to me,” Bennett said, describing her goal. “I took a touch to the inside and again, hit it as hard as I could, and it somehow ended up in the goal.”
The teams remained deadlocked throughout the rest of the first half and well into the second, until Schoales finished a cross from Miranda Rawlings to give UW a 2-1 lead. Both Schoales and Rawlings were substitutes in this game. It was Schoales' third goal of the season and Rawlings' first assist.
“I think we had a really good bench play,” UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. “The Rachel Wheelers of the world, Miranda Rawlings, who hasn't played a lot of minutes for us, Becca (Schoales) came off the bench, Chelsea Archer came off the bench. Those players came in and gave us really good minutes. When you can rotate your forwards like we did tonight and try to wear out their back line by putting them under pressure, I think it bodes well for our team.”
The Dawgs outshot the Sun Devils 14-11 and recorded five corner kicks to ASU's one. Kufeld tallied four saves and ASU keeper Chandler Morris recorded seven. Jaclyn Softli and Kimby Keever pressured the ASU back line, finishing with three and two shots, respectively.
With the win, UW picks up its ninth victory of the season and second consecutive win over a ranked opponent, having beaten then No. 12 Cal on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Berkeley. The Dawgs are now 9-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in Pac-12 play. ASU drops to 8-2-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the Pac-12.
UW continues its home stand this Sunday, Oct. 12, when the Huskies host the Arizona Wildcats at 1 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks and can be followed live on Twitter at @UW_WSoccer.
