SEATTLE - The UW women's soccer team was the first Husky team to compete in the 2011-12 school year and head coach Lesle Gallimore's team did not disappoint.
The No. 20/19 Huskies rallied back against a tough BYU team that is receiving votes, to tie and eventually take the lead in the first half, before ending in a 2-2 draw with the Cougars. Both teams are 0-0-1 on the year.
"Without having a scrimmage we were concerned about BYU's preparation since they did play some scrimmages and with our nerves of being on the field for the first time," said Gallimore. "I was happy about how we battled back to take the lead and we had plenty of opportunities late in the second half and overtime to score a couple. We kept creating and we were playing to win."
BYU scored in the 10th minute as Carlee Payne drilled one in past Husky keeper, senior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) off of a rebound from a shot by Stacy Bartholomew.
Sophomore Brianna Sweeney (Woodinville, Wash.) scored the equalizer, and her first career goal, in the 19th minute off of a corner kick by fellow sophomore Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.). Off of the corner, senior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) hit the crossbar and Sweeney scored on the rebound.
Less than 10 minutes later, Elston scored herself on a long pass in the middle of the field from sophomore Allie Beahan (Sammamish, Wash.).
After going into halftime with a 2-1 lead, UW gave up a goal in the 59th minute as Dana Oldroyd scored on a rebound shot.
It wouldn't be Husky women's soccer if it didn't head into overtime. It was the fourth-straight game, dating back to last season, in which UW had played in overtime.
Both teams had good opportunities late in overtime, including a great shot by freshman Jaclyn Softli (Sammamish, Wash.) that just missed wide right just minutes after entering her first collegiate game.
"This is not a bad result for us," Gallimore added. "BYU is a really good team that is going to win a lot of games and they always do. The great thing for us is that we have just one game this weekend so we have time before next week's games to look at things and make some decisions on who goes where and what our tactics are."
Other newcomers that got action for the Huskies were, sophomore transfer Stine Shoening (Woodinville, Wash.) who got the start, and the Archer twins, Chelsea and Christina.
"Stine played outstanding," Gallimore said. "I was really impressed. We had an injury and she got the start and now there will be a battle at that position."
The Huskies hit the road Aug. 26-28 to play in the Wisconsin-Madison tournament.
