MADISON, Wis. - With 27 seconds left, sophomore Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) scored on a free kick to put UW on the board, but it wasn't enough as the No. 23/24 Huskies fell to Wisconsin, 2-1. The Huskies fall to 0-1-1 on the season.
It was the second goal of the season for Elston, who scored the second goal in a 2-2 tie vs. BYU on opening night.
Wisconsin held the statistical advantage in almost every category, out-shooting UW 15-7 and earning more corner kicks, 9-4.
Husky senior keeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) made a huge save in the 13th minute off the first shot of the game for either team. LaFontaine-Kussmann finished with six saves in the game.
In the 36th minute, Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead as Laurie Nosbusch dribbled into the corner and dropped it off to Julia Roddar who crossed it into the box. Cara Walls got a touch on it and LaFontaine-Kussmann stopped it but couldn't control. Walls then knocked home the rebound for the first goal of her college career.
"We started the game well enough, but Wisconsin's physical pressing style gave us trouble and we gave up too much to them on defense. It eventually resulted in a poor goal against us," said head coach Lesle Gallimore.
The first shot on goal for UW came with four minutes left in the first half from senior Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.).
In the 55th minute, Leigh Williams scored for Badgers, giving them a 2-0 lead. Roddar got the assist.
"Lindsay Elston and Kate Deines both played admirably and we had some young players come off the bench and provide a spark; however our team defending is way beneath where it needs to be for us to win games and that is where we need to improve first and foremost," Gallimore continued. "We'll be taking a look at personnel and positions and working to put our team in a position to go after games as opposed to finding ourselves in a position where we have to chase the game; that's never where you want to find yourself in a game. "Coming back" is a positive attribute, but not one you want as your M.O. We will continue to work to improve on our physical and mental toughness, as well as our composure to play our style for 90 minutes even when pressed. The Huskies will look for their first win of 2011 against Iowa State on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT. Live chat and stats will be available on www.uwbadgers.com.
"We intend to split and beat Iowa State on Sunday," Gallimore added. "That will take work and attention to things that did not go well in the Wisconsin game. I'm confident this group will respond to the loss.
