EUGENE, Ore. - Another day, another low-scoring, tight game for the Washington baseball team. One night after the Huskies beat Oregon by a run in 14 innnings on Friday, the Dawgs went down to the wire again Saturday night at PK Park, scoring three runs in the 10th inning to beat the Ducks, 3-0.
While the Huskies saw a stretch of 10 straight one- or two-run games come to and end in the three-run victory, the Dawgs did play in their third straight extra-inning game, and the fifth to go beyond nine innings in their last 11. The winning run or runs have been scored in the final inning of eight of the Huskies' last 11.
Washington improved to 9-19 overall, 2-3 in the Pac-10. Oregon dropped to 14-14 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
UW sophomore Aaron West (1-5) held the Ducks scoreless on five hits in his nine innings of work. West walked one and struck out five for the victory. Freshman Jeff Brigham pitched a 1-2-3 10th inning for the save, his second.
In the 10th, Husky right fielder Chase Anselment led off the inning by reaching on an error by Ducks first baseman Shawn Peterson. Catcher B.K. Santy followed with a bunt, but reliever Scott McGough threw late to second base trying to get the lead runner. After Ty Afenir sacrificed and Spencer Rogers was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Husky sophomore Joe Meggs then laid down a squeeze bunt to score pinch runner Will Sparks from third base. Santy then scored from third on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Troy Scott then greeted reliever Porter Clayton with an RBI single to left, scoring another.
McGough (0-4), who entered the game to open the 10th inning, gave up three unearned runs for the loss. Ducks starter Madison Boer pitched nine scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out nine.
The biggest threat of the early innings came in the fifth when the Ducks got runners to first and third with one out. However, West got a strikeout for the second out and, after a walk loaded the bases, a popout to end the inning.
After that, both West and Boer seemed to get stronger as each team managed only one base runner apiece over the sixth through ninth innings. Boer retired the last seven batters he faced before being relieved to begin the 10th. West sat down the last 10 Ducks before his outing came to a close after nine innings.
The Huskies and Ducks close out the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio and on Comcast SportsNet television.
