
Ducks Avoid Sweep With Win Over Huskies

EUGENE, Ore. - After being held scoreless by UW pitchers for 15 consecutive innings entering Sunday, Oregon's offense awoke as the Ducks beat the Washington baseball team, 9-0, in the final game of a three-game Pac-10 series at PK Park.
Oregon (15-14 overall, 1-5 in the Pac-10) avoided a series sweep and picked up its first conference win. Washington fell to 9-20 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Huskies won the first two games of the series, 4-3 in 14 innings and 3-0 in 10 innings.
Pitching was once again the name of the game on Sunday, with Ducks junior Alex Keudell (4-3) picking up the win with eight innings of shutout ball. The right-hander gave up three hits, walked two and struck out six for the win. Brando Tessar pitched the ninth for Oregon.
Husky freshman starter Austin Voth (1-3) suffered the loss. In his five innings, he allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
After being shut out for 16 straight innings including the first inning, the Ducks broke through in the second Sunday. J.J. Altobelli led off with a single and scored from first when Brett Hambright doubled into the left-field corner. After a bunt single and an out, Danny Pulfer drove in Hambright with a single to right-center. Voth, however, got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts to strand runners at second and third with the Ducks leading, 2-0.
In the fifth, Oregon first baseman Shawn Peterson made it 3-0 with a two-out solo homer to left field. In the sixth, with freshman reliever Zach Wright on the for Huskies, the Ducks stretched their lead, ralling for two more runs, all with two out. Brett Thomas doubled and scored on a single from K.C. Serna. Serna then came in when Danny Pulfer doubled off the base of the fence in left, making it 5-0.
In the seventh, the Ducks tacked on four more. The inning was highlighted by a two-run, two-out single from Pulfer.
Next up for the Huskies is a Tuesday game vs. SeattleU, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. This coming weekend, California visits Husky Ballpark for a three-game series.
