SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team's current string of close games decided in the late innings continued Friday night as Ty Afenir's 14th-inning, two-out single scored Troy Scott with the go-ahead run and lifted the Huskies to a 4-3 win over Oregon in the opener of a three-game, Pac-10 series at PK Park.
The game was the Huskies' 10th in a row decided by one or two runs, and the seventh of those 10 in which the winning run was scored in the final inning. It was also the UW's fourth extra-inning game in that stretch. Washington improved to 8-19 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-10 while the Ducks fell to 14-13 and 0-4.
Oregon tied the game with a run in the eighth, but neither team could score again until the 14th. Scott, the Husky third baseman, led off that inning by reaching on an error by the Ducks shortstop K.C. Serna. He moved to second on a bunt and to third on a groundout before Afenir singled just under Serna's glove and into left.
Washington reliever Adam Cimber (2-2), who entered the game with one out in the 10th, went the rest of the way, holding the Ducks scoreless on four hits over four and two-thirds for the win.
Oregon closer Kellen Moen (1-2) allowed only the one unearned run four hits over his six innings to take the loss.
Both teams' starters turned in solid outings. Husky Geoff Brown, who started in place of Jacob Clem, who was injured in practice this week, gave up two runs on only three hits over five and two-thirds while Oregon ace Tyler Anderson allowed three runs on three hits over seven innings.
Oregon opened the second inning with a double from Aaron Jones, the first baserunner of the game. After a bunt moved Jones to third, he scored on a groundout from Shawn Peterson, giving the Ducks a 1-0 edge.
In the fourth, left fielder Joe Meggs opened the Huskies' account as his one-out single was the UW's first hit off of Anderson. Meggs stole second on what ended up being a wild pitch, which allowed him to continue on to third. Jacob Lamb followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Meggs to tie it a 1-1.
After the sacrifice fly, the Huskies loaded the bases with two outs as walks to Ryan Wiggins and Scott sandwiched a single from Eric Peterson. Catcher B.K. Santy then blooped a single to shallow right field, scoring Wiggins and Peterson to make it a 3-1 Husky lead. Scott was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning.
In the sixth, Oregon got one run back as Jones reached on a two-out single and, after a walk, scored on a single from Peterson. The Ducks then drew even at 3-3 in the eighth as Stefan Sabol led off with a single, took second on a bunt and then scored on a single from catcher Jack Marder.
In the 11th, Oregon's Peterson led off by singling up the middle. Pinch runner Connor Hofmann replaced him and moved up to second on a bunt. J.J. Altobelli followed with a single off the leg of UW pitcher Adam Cimber. However, Cimber got off the hook as he stepped off the rubber and threw Hofmann out at the plate trying to steal home for the second out and then
The Huskies and Ducks play game two of the series Saturday at 5:00 p.m. before wrapping up Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio and on Comcast SportsNet television.
