SEATTLE - Washington erupted for eight runs on Saturday at Husky Ballpark and UW beat USC 8-2 in Pac-10 Conference action to salvage the final game of a three-game series against the Trojans.
Washington's bats were alive from the onset of the game as they had at least two runners on base in each of the first seven innings. Six Huskies collected at least two hits, led by Joe Meggs, who was 3 for 3 with a homerun and four RBI and Jacob Lamb, who was 3 for 5.
The big inning for the Huskies (12-25, 3-9 Pac-10) came in the fifth when the Dawgs were able to push five runs across the plate. USC (18-21, 8-7 Pac-10) starter Logan Odom (3-5) retired the first two batters easily before running into two-out trouble.
Troy Scott and Eric Peterson got things going with back-to-back singles. B.K. Santy followed by getting hit by a pitch, ending the day for Odom. Right fielder Chase Anselment drove the first pitch he saw from reliever Kyle Richter over right fielder Alex Sherrod's head to score two runs. Meggs followed with a three-run blast, also driving the first pitch he saw over the left field wall, for his first career UW homerun.
Freshman starter Austin Voth (2-4) was the lucky recipient of the offensive explosion by the Huskies as he picked up his second career win. Voth had his best outing of the season, hurling a career-high 7 innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out four and walking two batters.
The Huskies took the lead in the third on an RBI single up the middle by Lamb. The hit drove home Brian Wolfe from second base and gave Lamb his team-leading 20th RBI of the season.
Washington added another run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, when Brendan Gardner-Young hustled out an infield single to score B.K. Santy from third. Meggs tried to catch the Trojans' defense sleeping by sneaking home from second on the play, but was gunned down at the plate on a perfect throw to by first baseman Ricky Oropesa.
USC got on the scoreboard first, plating a run in the second. The Trojans loaded the bases on Voth with less than two outs, but were only able to score one on a sacrifice fly by J.R. Aguirre.
The Trojans' lead did not last long, as Washington tied things up in the bottom of the second. Meggs hit an RBI single through the hole at short to score Peterson from third.
USC was only able to get on the board again in the ninth, when they tacked on one against UW reliever Adam Cimber.
The win was the Huskies first at home in six tries during the Pac-10 season and snapped the Trojans' five-game win streak.
The Huskies return to action on Monday at 6:00 p.m. for the first of a two-game set against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
