PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State took game one of the Apple Cup series of baseball Friday, using a pair of early home runs to beat Washington, 5-2, at Bailey-Brayton Field, in the first of a three-game Pac-10 series.
The Huskies out-hit the Cougars, 10-6, but couldn't capitalize. Joe Meggs led the Huskies, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Eight of the nine Husky starters contributed at least one hit.
Washington State starter Adam Conley (5-5) worked seven and two-thirds innings for the victory. He gave up just two runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out six. Paris Shewey pitched the ninth for his eighth save.
Husky starter Geoff Brown (1-5) took the loss. In his four and two-thirds innings, he surrendered five runs on six hits. Senior Jacob Clem, making his second appearance since missing three weeks due to injury, retired all seven batters he faced in two and one-third innings of relief.
WSU (18-19 overall, 4-12 in the Pac-10) got on the board first in the second inning. After Taylor Ard led off the inning with a double, third baseman Matt Argyropoulos sent a home run over the fence in right-center field, his fifth of the year, to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies (12-26, 3-10), who had gotten two aboard in each of the first two innings, broke through for a run in the third. With two runners on via a walk and a hit batter, second baseman Jacob Lamb bounced a single through the right side, plating Ty Afenir to cut the Cougar lead to 2-1.
In the fourth, WSU right fielder Derek Jones hit a solo homer, his seventh, to stretch the lead to 3-1. In the fifth, the Cougars loaded the bases on a double and two walks before Brett Jacobs singled to drive in a pair.
Washington scored a run in the seventh when Afenir singled, took second on a passed ball and scored on a single from Brendan Gardner-Young.
The Huskies and Cougars go at it again Saturday and Sunday, with both games starting at 12:00 p.m. Both will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and Saturday's game will also be televised on ROOT Sports.
