SEATTLE - Down 11-2 going into the seventh inning, the Washington baseball team mounted a torrid comeback, scoring seven runs in the seventh, but the Huskies could not pull off the feat and fell to the Trojans 12-9, Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
USC had built an 11-2 lead thanks in large part to a pair of homers, while the Huskies, who scored two in the first, had been held scoreless since.
After an out to open the seventh, the UW loaded the bases on a walk and two singles. Jacob Lamb drew a walk to force in one and a single from Troy Scott and a groundout from Eric Peterson scored one each. Catcher B.K. Santy followed with a single to plate two more and right fielder Chase Anselment belted a homer to deep right-center, cutting what was a nine-run deficit to just two.
After Joe Meggs doubled, Ty Afenir came to the plate as the potential tying run, but lined sharply to center field to end the inning.
USC added a 12th run in the eighth as Ricky Oropesa walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.
USC starter Austin Wood (4-5) gave up a pair of runs in the first inning, but then held the Huskies scoreless until the outburst in the seventh. He ended his night having allowed five runs on 11 hits over six and one-third as the Trojans improved to 18-20 overall and 8-6 in the Pac-10.
The Trojans opened up a lead in the first. After Garret Houts was hit by a pitch, Oropesa sent a home run just over the fence in straightaway center, his sixth of the year, to stake the visitors to a 2-0 advantage.
Washington (11-25, 2-9) answered in its half of the first. After singles from Brendan Gardner-Young and Brian Wolfe opened the inning, Lamb bounced a ball off the mound and up the middle, scoring Gardner-Young, though Wolfe was thrown out at third base. Scott followed with a double to right field, scoring Lamb to tie the score at 2-2.
In the third, USC shortstop James Roberts led off with a double and eventually scored from third base on a squeeze bunt from Houts, giving the Trojans the lead back at 3-2.
In the fourth, USC's Alex Sherrod singled and scored on a double from Matt Foat. Foat then crossed on a single from Adam Landecker, stretching the Trojans' lead to 5-2.
In the fifth, the Trojans got a two-out, two-run single from Foat to drive in two more and a single from Brandon Garcia brought home another as USC made it 8-2. In the seventh, USC catcher Kevin Roundtree hit a three-run homer to right to make it 11-2.
Husky starter Aaron West fell to 1-7 with the loss. In his four innings, he gave up five runs on six hits while striking out three. Senior Jacob Clem, who hadn't pitched since April 2 due to an injury, made his return, pitching the fifth inning.
Six Huskies finished the game with multiple hits, led by Gardner-Young, who was 3-for-5. Lamb, Scott, Santy and Anselment each had two hits and two runs batted in.
The Huskies and Trojans wrap up the series Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
