SEATTLE - Husky starter Geoff Brown threw a gem for Washington on Thursday night at Husky Ballpark, but USC starter Andrew Triggs was equally outstanding. Triggs pitched a complete game five-hitter and USC won 2-1.
Brown (1-4) worked eight innings, allowing two runs - both coming in the second inning - on just six hits. He struck out a season-high four and walked one batter.
Triggs (3-3) one-upped Brown allowing one run in the first inning and five hits while striking out a career-high 10 Huskies in his second 9 inning performance of the season.
The Huskies (11-24, 2-8) had their chances to get to Triggs throughout the game, but were never able to capitalize after taking the lead in the first inning.
Washington jumped ahead after Jacob Lamb doubled over leftfielder Matt Foat's head to drive home Brendan Gardner-Young. Gardner-Young led off with a walk and was off and running on a 2-2 pitch and scored easily to give Lamb his 17th RBI of the season.
The Huskies did not enjoy the advantage for the long when USC (17-20, 7-6) mounted a two-run, two-out, bases-empty rally in the top of the second, which proved to be the difference in the game. Adam Landecker singled, Kevin Swick walked and both scored on a bloop double by No. 9 hitter James Roberts that was in no-man's-land and just out of reach of Lamb `s glove.
Washington had the tying run on second in consecutive innings in the sixth and seventh, but came away empty handed both times.
The Huskies had Brian Wolfe on second with one out in the seventh when a pass ball allowed him to advance to third. On the pitch, pinch hitter Spencer Rogers was called out on a check-swing third strike that the Husky bench vehemently protested. Triggs escaped the jam when Ty Afenir grounded back to the mound, but the fireworks were not over.
In between innings, Husky head coach Lindsay Meggs was thrown out by home plate umpire Travis Katzenmeyer for arguing the check-swing call earlier.
Washington was unable to muster a threat in the eighth and ninth inning and was sent to their fourth-straight home loss in Pac-10 action.
The Huskies resume the series Friday at 6:00 p.m. against USC for game two of the three-game set.
