SEATTLE - Washington starter Jeff Brigham (3-0) threw seven innings of three-hit, shutout baseball and shortstop Ty Afenir went 3-for-4 with three RBI at the plate as the Huskies beat Seattle University 7-1 at Husky Ballpark on Tuesday.
Brigham struck out one batter and walked two in keeping the Redhawks' (14-16) batters off balance all day. No SeattleU base runners reached third base with Brigham on the mound and he allowed just three runners to second base.
The bottom of the Huskies' batting order provided most of the offense for Washington (11-23). The No. 6 through 9 hitters each had at least two hits and combined to go 9-for-14 from the plate, score all seven runs and drive in five.
Washington took a 2-0 lead in the second when they were able to muster a couple runs across the plate despite having the bases empty and two outs. Ryan Wiggins got things going with a walk and was driven home on a double to deep left by Chase Anselment. Joe Meggs followed with a grounder to shortstop Nick Latta that could have been the third out. Latta threw wide of the base forcing Jace Sloan to dive to save the ball and Anselment hustled home from second to score an unearned run for the Huskies.
The Huskies extended their lead in the fourth inning with three more runs. Wiggins led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Anselment. He scored on a double down the left field line by Meggs. Ty Afenir followed with a double down the right field line on the very next pitch that plated Meggs. Afenir would score the Huskies fifth run when pinch-hitter Cody Stephens laid down a perfect squeeze bunt.
Washington piled on two more runs in the sixth when Afenir singled to right field to score Anselment and Meggs.
SeattleU got on the board in the 8th inning when Cullen Hendrickson and Bryndon Ecklund hit back-to-back doubles of UW reliever Zach Wright.
The Huskies and Redhawks split the season series with each team winning twice.
The Huskies resume Pac-10 action this Thursday when they host USC (15-20, 6-6 Pac-10) in the first of a three-game series that runs through Saturday.
