STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State first baseman Zach Johnson hit a two-run home run, his second homer of the game, in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Cowboys to a 4-2 win over the Washington baseball team Wednesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Cowboys improved to 16-5 with the win while the Huskies fell to 4-14.
UW senior Jacob Clem (1-4), usually a starter, took the loss, having entered the game to begin the ninth inning. OSU's Randy McCurry (1-0), who pitched the top of the 11th, picked up the win.
Oklahoma State scored first in the third inning as Devin Shines led off with a double and eventually scored on a two-out triple from Dane Phillips.
In the fifth, Washington took the lead. After singles from Eric Peterson and Ryan Wiggins, shortstop Ty Afenir came through with a two-out single, scoring both runners to put the UW on top, 2-1.
The lead lasted until the bottom of the sixth when Johnson hit his first homer of the night to knot the score at 2-2.
Oklahoma State threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting runners to first and third with two, but Clem got a flyout to left to send the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, Washington had pinch runner Will Sparks thrown out at the plate as he tried to score from second base on a groundout.
UW starter Geoff Brown went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, but of course didn't figure in the decision. Afenir and Wiggins each had two hits to lead the Husky offense. OSU's Johnson finished the game 2-for-5 with three runs batted in.
This weekend, the UW returns home to host Nevada in a three-game series. Fans can watch live video of all three games, for free, at gohuskies.com.
