SEATTLE - Nevada broke a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to emerge from a pitchers' duel with a 2-1 victory over the Washington baseball team Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Nevada (5-13) began the ninth inning when Nick Melino reached on an error. He hit a grounder to first baseman Eric Peterson, who tossed to pitcher Aaron West covering first base. But West's foot didn't find the bag, allowing Kohan to reach safely. After taking second on a bunt, Jamison Rowe pinch ran. He moved to third on a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Hugo Hernandez to put Nevada in front, 2-1.
West (0-4) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in a nine-inning complete game. He allowed 10 hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out three.
After giving up six hits to the first nine batters of the game, West settled in. He retired 10 in a row after a leadoff double in the third and gave up just four singles (including a bunt and a bloop) over the next seven innings.
Nevada starter Tom Jameson (1-4) went eight innings for the victory, allowing one run on eight hits. Matt Gardner struck out two in the ninth to earn his third save.
Nevada, which had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the first, scored the game's first run in the second. Joe Kohan led off the inning with a triple. After a grounder back to the mound kept him at third, Hugo Hernandez singled to score Kohan, giving the Wolf Pack a 1-0 lead.
In the third, the Huskies (4-15) tied the score with a run. With Spencer Rogers and Joe Meggs aboard at the corners on a pair of singles, Jacob Lamb laced a single through the right side, scoring Rogers to tie it at 1-1.
Lamb finished the game 3-for-3 while Meggs was 2-for-3 to lead the Husky offense.
The series continues with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday. Fans can watch live video of both games on gohuskies.com.
