STILLWATER, Okla. - Left fielder Joe Meggs drove in five runs and the Washington baseball team scored in every inning as the Huskies beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 20-5, Tuesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Huskies (4-13) and Golden Lions (6-12) played the game at Oklahoma State's home field. Washington will take on the Cowboys Wednesday while UAPB was schedule to face OSU Tuesday evening.
Husky righty Jeff Brigham (2-0) worked six innings for the victory in his first college start. The freshman from Thomas Jefferson High in Federal Way allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six, and retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.
UAPB starter Redmond Floyd (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing seven earned runs over three innings.
Meggs was 1-for-3 with three runs and five RBI, while also adding a walk, a sacrifice and a hit-by-pitch. First baseman Eric Peterson went 3-for-4 and catcher Ryan Wiggins finished 2-for-4 with four runs scored. Eleven different Huskies recorded a hit, including six with two or more, and the UW scored at least one run in all eight of its at bats. As the home team, the UW didn't have to hit in the ninth.
Washington got started in the first. Designated hitter Brendan-Gardner Young led off with a triple and, after the bases were loaded on an error and a walk, a double-play ground ball sent Gardner-Young home. Caleb Brown then singled to right to drive in a second run, giving Washington a 2-0 lead.
Pine Bluff answered quickly though. After a leadoff single in the second, Matt Pace hit a two-run homer to left, tying the score at 2-2.
The UW went back in front in the bottom of the second, exploding for seven runs. Wiggins led off with a single and then scored when Peterson's single to left was mishandled by the left fielder. Ty Afenir singled and Gardner-Young reached on an error to load the bases, and Meggs followed with a two-run single. Gardner-Young then scored on a double from Jacob Lamb and Troy Scott doubled to drive in Lamb and Meggs. The scoring ended when Scott scored thanks to the third Golden Lions error of the inning, staking the Huskies to a 9-2 lead.
The Golden Lions picked up a pair of runs in the third on RBI singles from Barry McDonley and Pace, but the Huskies got both of those back in the bottom of the third as Afenir scored from third on Meggs bunt and Gardner-Young came across on a passed ball, making it an 11-4 game.
Washington added another pair of runs in the fourth. Meggs picked up his fourth RBI of the day when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Peterson, who'd singled, scored from third on a wild pitch, upping the lead to 13-4. In the fifth, Peterson doubled to drive in Wiggins with the Huskies' 14th run.
In the sixth, the Huskies added two as Meggs walked and eventually scored on an error. Later, Brown singled to send home Scott. After Pine Bluff scored in the seventh on an RBI double from Chazz Montgomery, Washington posted another run in the bottom of the inning when Wiggins singled and eventually scored on an error.
In the eighth, the Huskies finished up with three more runs as Brian Wolfe drove in one with a single, a double-play sent home another and Will Sparks drove in the last one with a pinch-hit single, capping the scoring a 20-5.
Wednesday, the Huskies face Oklahoma State at 4:30 p.m. PT. This weekend, the UW returns home to host Nevada in a three-game series.
